ADM Comparing Concave and Convex Mirrors October 16 2025

The document outlines the objectives for students to differentiate between concave and convex mirrors and understand their applications. It includes sections for definitions, ray diagrams for image formation, and a characteristics table comparing the properties of both mirror types. The focus is on practical understanding and visual representation of how each mirror functions in various scenarios.

Comparing Concave and Convex Mirrors

I OBJECTIVE

Students should be able to differentiate concave and convex mirrors

Explain the importance of utilizing curved mirrors in different fields

Part A: Concept Check

1. Definitions
a. What is a concave mirror?
b. What is a convex mirror?

2. Ray Diagrams / Image Formation

For each mirror type, draw ray diagrams showing how an image is formed for an object
placed:

o beyond the center of curvature (for concave)

o between the focal point and the mirror (for concave)

o anywhere in front of a convex mirror

In each case, label the object, mirror, principal axis, focal point, center of curvature (if
applicable), rays, and the image (real/virtual, upright/inverted, magnified/reduced).

3. Characteristics Table
Fill in the table with the correct properties:

Property Concave mirror Convex mirror

Reflection (side of mirror used)

Image type (real / virtual / both)

Orientation (upright / inverted / both)

Magnification (size relative to object)

Uses / applications
