Knowledge Section
1. Different three-dimensional objects can appear the same in an orthographic drawing.
(1 mark)
True False
2. A net is a pattern that has been cut into pieces. (1 mark)
True False
3. Use the diagram displayed on the right for the questions below.
a. Create an isometric diagram on the grid displayed below.
(2 marks)
b. Create an orthographic diagram on the grid below. (3 marks)
4. Identify the geometric shape that is represented by the orthographic drawing. Explain
your choice. (2 marks)
The drawing represents a cone.
When you look at a cone from the top
you see the shape of the base which
is a circle. Since the cone is tapered,
you see the same shape, a triangle,
when you look at it from the front or
from the side.
5. Describe the three dimensional figure represented by each net. (2 marks)
a. b.
A square-based pyramid a cylinder without a top
6. Make a sketch of an object or explain the object that could be created using the pattern
displayed. (2 marks)
Answers may vary.
7. A landscaping company decides to create a scale drawing of the lot of the house
displayed below. Explain two reasons why a landscaper might think it is a good idea to
have a scale drawing of the lot. (2 marks)
Answer may vary.
Scale diagram allows them to model the
landscaping to the owners.
The scale model will allow them to calculate
the amount of materials they will need for a
particular design.
Application Section
8. Polygons are used as visual cues for the type of information they represent. Name three
different polygons that are used in traffic signs and explain the visual cue that each one
represents. (3 marks)
An octagon is used to indicate a stop sign.
Diamonds are used to indicate that the motorist must be careful.
Triangles are used for yield signs.
Square signs are used for general information/instructions.
9. The picture on the right is a video game case.
a) Sketch a pattern that could be used to
create the video game case. Be sure to label
the pattern to indicate what piece of the
video game case it represents. (3marks)
b) Could a net be used instead of a pattern? Explain. (1 mark)
Yes. The pieces could all be joined at the bottom and then the other pieces could
be folded and then joined.
10. A snowblower is packaged in a cardboard box that is 2' by 2.5' by 3'.
a) Use the grid below to create a net that could be used to create a scale model of
the cardboard box. (3 marks)
b) If the case was going to be made out of wood for shipping overseas, would a net
still be used? Explain. (2 marks)
No. Wood doesn’t bend so it wouldn’t be useful to use a net. However, if the
sides were cut out as a pattern, the same shapes could be used.
11. The diagram below represents a Quonset hut. A Quonset
hut is being built for storage.
a) Create an isometric drawing of the hut.(2 marks)
b) Create an orthographic representation of the hut. (3 marks)
c) Create a net that could be used to create a scale model of the hut. (3 marks)
Calculate the width of the top of the hut.
2π r
2
= πr
= π (4)
≈ 12.6m
Problem Solving Section
12. Explain why the diagram displayed on the right cannot represent a real object. (2 marks)
It appears as though the front wall starts at one
level and finishes at another. The walls are all
connected side by side so there isn’t any way to
join to a higher level from where they started.
Since this is impossible, the diagram cannot
really represent a real object.
13. A tetrahedron is a four-sided figure made up entirely of triangles.
An example of a tetrahedron is displayed on the right. (2 marks)
Circle the nets displayed below that will create a tetrahedron.
14. A cylindrical juice can has a diameter of 12 cm and a height of 20 cm. The company
would like to design a box-shaped container. This way they could use cheaper material
to manufacture the container. The box-shaped container should hold the same amount
of juice as the original cylindrical container. (6 marks)
Calculate the volume of the Need the volume of the box-shape container to have
cylindrical can. the same volume.
V = π r 2h V = l ×w × h
2 2261.9 = l × w × h
= π ( 6 ) ( 20 )
= 720π Choose the width to be a nice width to hold on to.
≈ 2261.94671058 2261.9 = l × 8 × h
282.7 ≈ l × h
Keep the height the same as the can.
282.7 ≈ l × 20
14.1 ≈ l
This seems like a reasonable length.
Check the volume
V = l ×w × h
= 14.1× 8 × 20
= 2256
Not quite enough. Make the length a little longer.
V = l ×w × h
= 14.2 × 8 × 20
= 2272
Now the container will hold the same amount as the
original cylindrical can with a minimal amount of
extra room.
