Aelan Thorne, Oathbound Inquisitor

Race: Half-Elf (or Aasimar if you want stronger celestial themes)

Class: Cleric (Twilight Domain or Knowledge Domain) multiclassed with Paladin or

Warlock (Celestial)

Background: Acolyte (or Haunted One for a darker twist)

Alignment: Lawful Neutral shifting to ??? (depends on choices)

Backstory:

Aelan Thorne was born in the shadow of a temple, raised by a devout order sworn to
uphold the Oath of Balance. From a young age, they were taught that the gods are
sacred, that order is paramount, and that the mortal world exists only because the
divine wills it so.

But Aelan always heard something… else.

In dreams, a voice whispered truths the priests would not speak. In moments of
prayer, they felt not peace, but unease—like a tether stretched too tight. One
night, while investigating an ancient crypt sealed by divine law, Aelan uncovered a
hidden scripture—a forgotten gospel detailing a 13th god erased from history, a
being who tried to warn the others before the Oath was signed.

Branded a heretic and cast out by their own order, Aelan now wanders the world,
seeking out fragments of forgotten faith. They're driven not by vengeance, but by a
need to understand whether the Oath was truly sacred… or a prison.

They still wear their holy symbol, though they no longer know which god it honors.

Role in the Campaign:

Aelan is a perfect “bridge” character—someone with a strong connection to divine

law, but who now questions it. Their past as a loyal servant of the gods gives them
authority (and enemies) in religious and political circles.

As the campaign progresses, Aelan might be pursued by Oathborn enforcers trying to

silence them—or approached by Oathless beings offering forbidden truths. They could
become a key figure in deciding whether to rebuild the old order, or help destroy
it.

Character Hooks:

Carries a shard of the original Oath, unknowingly embedded in their soul.

Haunted by visions of a silver eye watching from behind the stars.

Their divine magic flickers, influenced by whichever god currently has sway—
sometimes healing, sometimes harming.

A childhood friend is now a rising inquisitor of the faith, sent to hunt Aelan
down.

May be the reincarnation (or vessel) of the forgotten 13th god’s final spark.
