AISC End Plate MomentConnection Rafter

The document details the design and analysis of an end plate on a rafter moment connection, including specifications for dimensions, forces, and bolt requirements. It confirms that the design meets the necessary shear and tension checks according to AISC standards, with a recommended end plate thickness of 15 mm. Additionally, it evaluates the load distribution on stiffeners and verifies that the allowable tensile forces are sufficient to support the calculated loads.

D
The bending of the plate is analyzed as two beams perpendicular to each other with the following behavior :
a) Both the beams have the same stiffness, since the plate is of uniform thickness
b) Both the beams have the same deflection at mid point
c) Both the beams are fixed-end, with bolt-lines as the fixed locations

Let Bolt Load = Pb = 95.0 kN

Bolt load distribution, from two bolts, to element 1 = P1
Bolt load distribution, from two bolts, to element 2 = P2
Distance from centre of bolt to centre of element 1 = L1/ 2 = 55.0 mm
Distance from centre of bolt to centre of element 2= L2/ 2 = 85.0 mm

Assuming deflections due to the two system of loads to be equal, say D

So, P1 * L13 / 192EI = P2 * L23 / 192EI
or, P1 = P2 * (L2 / L1)3

Again, 2Pb = P1 + P2
or, P1 = 2Pb - P2

Substituting value of P1 in above equation

2Pb - P2 = P2 * (L2 / L1)3
or, 2Pb = P2 + P2 * (L2 / L1)3
or, 2Pb = P2 * [ 1+ (L2 / L1)3 ]

Hence, P2 = 2Pb / [ 1+ (L2 / L1)3 ] = 40.483 kN

Similarly, P1 = 2Pb / [ 1+ (L1 / L2)3 ]*3 = 121.45 kN

P1 is the guiding force and shall be used for further evaluation of moments
