Methods of Research

Research is the systematic pursuit of truth that enhances understanding and informs decision-making. It can be categorized into qualitative and quantitative methods, with qualitative focusing on exploratory insights and quantitative emphasizing numerical data. Research is essential for revealing new ideas, developing understanding, and improving the quality of work in various fields.

1. What do you understand about research? Explain in your own perception.

“Do more, have more, in order to be more”

In my own perception, research is simply finding or seeking the truth in a systematic and organized way.
It is when you are interested to find or search something that excites you to improve it in many ways. It is also
within the word itself “re-search”, it means repeatedly searching through resources with a goal of finding
something new or latest. Research is also the backbone to quality work. No matter how competent and
experienced a person is in his or her field, without proper research, things go wrong, and the success rate
decreases. Research unlocks the unknowns, lets you explore the world from different perspectives, and fuels a
deeper understanding.

In general, research has something to do with efforts and hard work – the dedication and perseverance
to perform and finish something that is purposeful and meaningful not only today, not only tomorrow but also
to the next generation.

2. What is qualitative and quantitative research? Differentiate.

There are differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods, although their objectives
and applications overlap in many ways. Many times, those that undertake a research project often find they are
not aware of the differences between Qualitative Research and Quantitative Research methods. Many
mistakenly think the two terms can be used interchangeably.

So, what is the difference between Qualitative Research and Quantitative Research?

Qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying

reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses
for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research is also used to uncover trends in thought and opinions,
and dive deeper into the problem.

Qualitative data collection methods vary using unstructured or semi-structured techniques. Some
common methods include focus groups (group discussions), individual interviews, and
participation/observations. The sample size is typically small, and respondents are selected to fulfil a given
quota.

Quantitative Research
Quantitative Research is used to quantify the problem by way of generating numerical data or data that
can be transformed into usable statistics. It is used to quantify attitudes, opinions, behaviors, and other defined
variables – and generalize results from a larger sample population. Quantitative Research uses measurable data
to formulate facts and uncover patterns in research. Quantitative data collection methods are much more
structured than Qualitative data collection methods.
To sum up, qualitative research generates “textual data” (non-numerical). Quantitative research, on the
contrary, produces “numerical data” or information that can be converted into numbers.

3. Give at least two (2) importance of research? Explain each.

No matter what position we are in or how high up we are, there is always more to learn. The same
applies to our personal life. No matter how many experiences we have or how diverse our social circle, there are
things we don’t know. Research unlocks the unknowns, lets us explore the world from different perspectives,
and fuels a deeper understanding. In some areas, research is an essential part of success. In others, it may not
be necessary, but it has many benefits. Here are two reasons why research is important:

a. Research reveals new ideas and facts

Research sparks new ideas and facts; enables the researcher to draw conclusions about his research
topic. The more deeply one researches on a particular subject better he may get into the field and properly help
position his or her ideas. Research stimulates different ideas and helps build analytical concepts. When a learner
is curious to know, research provides him with a gateway to explore and explain different dimensions of the
subject. Research provides a great learning and positivity in the researcher and learners through the exploration
of new ideas and facts. It also helps raise awareness about the subject matter and provide new facts to the
people.

b. Research develops understanding and decision-making

It is the most valuable tool to understand complex problem, disapprove lies, uphold truth, and build on
to create knowledge that is reliable and authentic. Conducting research develops a better understanding and
enhances decision-making capabilities. Researchers analyze the details of a project and help take the right and
well-informed decisions. Understanding the problem and for decision making, it is important to know facts
observed and explored through research for better results and not relying on imagination or intuition to fade the
quality of the work. Research prompts decision making and develops a better understanding to solve the
problems.

Research is a broad concept required in our daily lives to improve performance and quality of work.
Research is important to build a better understanding, decision making and, discerning and analytical ideas to
facilitate better results. Research develops understanding and analytical skill so a researcher could implement
his or her guts to rationalize the work and build a better foundation for followers on the career field and so they
could take the right decision at the right time without facing hurdles.

4. Give at least two characteristics of research. Explain each.

a. Research should be systematic.

Research should be systematic because if a researcher wants to do a perfect research design or process
then it will have to evaluate or obtained the necessary information from the market in a systematic manner. It
takes various steps to do a perfect or systematic research process and all the steps of procedures are interlinked
to each other. Being systematic is searching, selecting, and managing the best available evidence for research,
according to a defined, planned, and consistent method, this should be applied to all types of reviews including
data.

b. Research should be empirical.

“I won't believe it until I see it”
In today’s world, the word empirical refers to collection of data using evidence that is collected through
observation or experience or by using instruments. All the above origins have one thing in common which is
dependence of observation and experiments to collect data and test them to come up with conclusions. This
means that any conclusion drawn is totally based upon ethical or hard evidence gathered information collected
from observations and real-life experiences. Specifically, there is verifiable evidence.

5. Why do we need to research? Explain in your own perspective.

We need to do research because of, to do some new and innovative work or some improvement in
already research have done, that will help in fulfillment of the society need. We need to do research with efforts
and hard work – the dedication and perseverance to perform and finish something that is purposeful and
meaningful not only today, not only tomorrow but also to the next generation.
There is no limitation to what you should research on. According to John Armstrong,” Aside from the
pure pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, research is linked to problem solving”. The life you enjoy now and
things that we have or experience now, that at some point seemed impossible to achieve, are all because of
research. So, it is without argument that I say, “research plays an important role in our day-to-day life”.
