of the most interesting aspects of Kauai is its different weather patterns. On the south side of
Kauai, the town of Koloa sits near Poipu Beach, which is often called sunny Poipu. The beach,
a popular area of the island, has short bursts of rainfall, but otherwise, the weather is almost
always a sunny 80 degrees. Generally, this area gets about 30 inches of rain a year. However,
the North Shore of Kauai, which includes such towns as Princeville and Hanalei, gets about
85 inches of rain a year, more than twice the amount of Poipu. These frequent, short bursts
of rainfall make this side of the island full of lush, green surroundings, Final, at the center of
the island is Waialeale, which is one of the wettest spots on earth, Waialeale can get as much

{nating animal, though it is actually not a bear. The koala is a marsu-
pial, and it keeps its young in a pouch much like the kangaroo. Like the kangaroo, koalas are
native to Australia, and their population numbers are rather low. Additionally, the female
koala gives birth only once a year to one baby (twins are reported but are rare). A typical
koala can live up to 17 years and generally weighs around 20 pounds at maturity.
Oddly, the koala eats only eucalypt leaves and bark from the eucalypt forests in eastern and
southeastern Australia. Eucalypt is poisonous to most all animals, but koalas have a diges-
tive system that is able to detoxify the leaves. Koalas rarely drink water because eucalypt
leaves are 50 percent water. However, in times of drought, koalas can and will drink water
to supplement their needs.
Koalas are social animals, and they need to live around other koalas for their health — they
don’t do well alone. Like cats, koalas sleep about 75 percent of the day and are most active
in the late evenings. During the day, they like to doze in the tops of the eucalypt trees.
When a baby koala (called a joey) is born, itis hairless, blind, less than 1 inch long, and
weighs less than 1 gram. After birth, the baby climbs into the mother's pouch on its own
and drinks milk from the mother for the next six months. After about 30 weeks, the baby
koala also begins to feed on pap, which is a specialized dropping the mother produces. Pap
helps the baby make the transition from milk to eucalypt. Eventually, the baby leaves the
pouch when it becomes too large, but it rides on the mother's back and stays with the
mother until the next baby koala is born.

It you think about the music scene in America over the past 75 years, nothing has had more
‘of an Impact to the sound and style of music than the electric guitar. The first electric gui-
tars appeared on the music scene in the early 1930s, Few people saw any real potential for
the instrument, and even guitar players clid not realize the possible sounds an electric guitar
could produce. Yet. as the era of rock and roll music started changing the musical landscape,
the electrie guitar became the defining instrument that created the sound for a new genera
tion of music lovers,
Acoustic and electric guitars are similar in that they both have six strings that are tuned
with tuning pegs. Also. both instruments have frets along the neck. However, the similarities.
end at the hody of the guitar. An acoustic guitar has a hollow body that allows sound from
the strings to resonate within the hollow cavity and generate sound. Electric guitars typk
cally have a thinner, solid body because the sound is not generated within the guitar itself.
Instead, when you pluck a string on an electric guitar, magnetic pickups controlled by
knobs found on the body produce the sound. The pickups generate a signal sent through a
cord or wireless controller to an amplifier and speaker, Because of the electrical and mag
etic component, electric guitars are capable of producing many different sounds, including
distortion effects. These kinds of power effects are pervasive in so many different kinds of
music today.

An alternator is part of a car's engine that works with the battery to generate electricity for
various parts of the car’s electrical system, such as the headlights, interior cabin lighting,
dashboard lighting, and so forth. The term alternator comes from alternating current, or AC.
The alternator is usually located toward the front of the engine, and the AC power that the
alternator generates comes from electromagnetism. As the engine runs, a rotor turns inside
the alternator, generating the electricity. The current is sent to the battery, and the battery
uses its power to run various parts of the vehicle as noted. In effect, when the car is run-
ning, the alternator works to charge the battery. Without the alternator, the battery cells
would quickly be depleted because the charge would be used up by the car’s different com-
ponents that need electrical power,
What is the author's main point? 24,

A public speaker depends on an effective speaking voice, but in reality, so much of a public
speaker's communication ability comes from nonverbal means. When a speaker stands in
front of an audience. he must effectively use a number of nonverbal communication behav-
lors that most of us take for granted every single day. This kinesic behavior helps convey
the message the speaker wants to communicate to the audience.
One of the most important aspects of this nonverbal communication is eye contact and
facial expression. When we talk to people, we give our words additional meaning and force
by the eye contact and facial expressions we use. For example, a person can say, “Lam
happy.” but conflicting facial expressions and eye contact can make the words have a sar:
sastic meaning.
Ina similar way, hand gestures and body posture also communicate to the audience. With
hand gestures. the speaker can emphasize key words, concepts, and ideas, Effective body
posture also communicates interest and attention, Without effective yestures and posture,
the speaker often appears disinterred or even araid

One of the most unusual breeds of cats is the Sphynx. The Sphynx is a larger, domesticated
cat that is virtually hairless. Aside from a lack of fur, the eats also have no eyelashes or
whiskers. Adding to the odd appearance are its exceptionally large ears and a long tail
Sphynx cats are social animals and enjoy both humans and other cats. Most Sphynx owners
describe the cats as being sinuilar to dogs because they enjoy being near their owners,
instead of having the typical solitary nature that most cats exhibit. Sphynx cats are playful
and adept climbers. They are generally easy to manage, although their energetic nature can
be difficult at times,
Most owners describe the Sphynx’s skin as a warm peach. The cats are rather soft, and
their skin often has many wrinkles. A cat’s normal body temperature is 102 degrees
Fahrenheit, so Sphynx cats are warm to the touch because there is no barrier of fur. Oddly,
even though their body temperature is warmer than humans, the Sphynx cats particularly

Level Practice Exam 1
reading through the answers and explanations provided in this chapter, Doing so is a
great way to find out what you missed and why. Also, reading through all the explanations —
Section 1: Writing Sample
Remember that writing samples for the SSAT don’t have right or wrong answers, and with
this topic (practice makes perlect), you can write about a variety of issues. So don't get
caught up in thinking, "Did l write what they wanted?” because, truthfully, the readers of
your writing sample don't eare what you write about, They simply want to see that you can
‘organize your thoughts, show your writer's voice, and write a strong essay.
With that thought in mind, the following are a few things you should have done to write a
winning essay for your practice test. (For more valuable tips on writing an effective essay
and some examples, check out Chapter 8.)
£7 Because the essay prompt asks you to agree or disagree with the statement, “Practice
f makes perfect,” you should have made clear in your introduction what position you're
taking — whether you agree or disagree with the statement, Simply talking about prac-
tice won't cut it here because you're asked to agree or disagree with the idea that prac
tice makes perfect.
Your body paragraphs should have included specific examples that help back up or
prave your position, These examples can be of a famous person, such as a sports star
or a talented actor or singer, or a character {rom a book you read who learned how to
do something well after practicing. Ii you use a character from a book or story on the
actual test, make sure you include the name of the character and mention the name of
the story or book
+ To really hit a home run with this essay, you should have included an example from
i
f
}
£ your own life. Did you write about a time where you learned to do something well after
§ alot of practice? Or if you disagreed with the statement, did you show how excess
| practice actually caused you not to do well? Remember that the readers want to hear
§ your voice. Including a personal story or experience is a great way to make a writing
{sample really come to life for the reader.
4 You should have included a conclusion that brought your ideas together and again
3 affirmed your position on the essay. Conclusions help show that your thoughts and
< ideas are organized and that you stuck with the topic, so don't forget about the conctu-
sion when you write28 Partiv:ssat Practice Exams
Finally, have someone else read your essay and mark misspelled words, poorly organized
sentences, misplaced commas, and other grammatical problems. Doing so helps you see
how many errors you made. Remember that the writing sample isn’t a grammar test, and a
few errors won't hurt you in the end, but overall, your sample should be well written and.
generally error free,

- D. 7 minus 7 is 0.
A. First, subtract 5,000 from 9,000: 9,000 ~ 5,000 = 4,000. If you subtract ® from 4,000, the
result is 3.991, To figure out what ® is, subtract 3,991 from 4,000: 4.000 - 3,991 = 9.
C. We know that the sides are equal in length. Because the six sides add up to 30, each side
must be 5 in length (30 +
D. If everyone paid the same amount, then Just check the answer choices to see which one
doesn't divide evenly into 90. The best answer is Choice (D), because 90 » 16 « 5.625, Some
people would have to pay $5.62 and some would pay $5.63, because you can't split pennies.
D. First, write down the possibilities for the first statement: 11, 12, 13, and 14. Then, write
down the possibilities for the second statement: 14 and 15. Choice (D) is the correct
answer because 14 is the only number that can fit into both statements,
C. You can cross-multiply here: 4 x 63 » 7x; 252 = 7x. Then, 252 + 7 = x, so.x = 36. Or because
you may notice that 7 multiplied by 9 is 63, you can do the same thing to 4 (4x9 = 36),
C. Just count up the small triangles. A square is two small triangles put together, so a
square equals 4 units and a small triangle equals 2 units,
8. E. Any number multiplied by 0 is 0. 1f8 x 0 = 0, then 0 x 100 = 0,
9. A. Pick a number to represent x to make this problem easier; just make sure you pick an

even number (for example, say x = 6). Choice (A) is the only answer choice that results in
an odd number (6 « 5 = 11)
€.Out of the 13 circles, 5 are shaded: so of the circles are shaded.
|. D. If one shaded box equals 700 pieces, then the answer is 1,400 because the gumballs row
has two more shaded boxes than the lallipops row.
€. The chocolates row has eight shaded boxes, and the jellybeans row has two, so Bis 4
times 2. Checking the answer choices is the easiest way to find the correct one. You can
also set up the equation as 8 = 2x and solve for x by dividing both sides by 2.
.D. An easy way to check whether a number ismaller tan iso see whether the top part
of te actions es than half ofthe bottom part. For 38 mere than half of 8,50 ou
row that fis bigger than
D. The correct answer is Choice (D) because $10.00 off of $50.00 is $40.00 ($50.00 - $10.00 =
$40.00), but 10 percent off of $50.00 = $45.00. To find 10 percent of a number, multiply the
number by 0.1: $50.00 x 0.1 = $5.00, then $50.00 - $5.00 = $45.00,
E. Check the answer choices. First, take 4 of 16, which is 18 « 2, so the number is much bigger
than 16. Then, try the other number given, 112; 42 - 14, so the number is greater than 112.
38
‘A. If you round 0.24 up to 0.25 (same thing as 4) and round 121 down to 120, then the
answer is closest to Choice (A).
D.AtoB = 1, BtoD = 2, and DtoB=2(1 +2+2=5).All the other paths are shorter.Chapter 20: Answers to SSAT Lower Level Practice Examt D&S
18, A. If Mark has x marbles. then Sophia has.x + 3 marbles, because she has 3 more than Mark's,
amount (which is x). If she gives away 6 marbles, subtract 6 from x + 3. Sox» 3-6 - x=3
Or you can pick a number for x. For example, if you say that x = 10, then Mark has 10 mar-
bles and Sophia has 13. If she gives him 6 of her 13 marbles, she has 7 left (13 ~ 6 ~ 7)
Then, check the answer choices, substituting 10 for x, and only Choice (A) produces 7
Keep this strategy in mind when you see variables in the answer choices (or any question,
19, A. The bottom of the can is a circle just like the top, so all the points where it touches the
ground are also a circle, Because the bottom is flat, all the points on and inside the circle
touch the ground, so the picture of the shaded circle represents all those points.
48 20. E.If you think about it, you may realize that it'd take a pretty low grade to reduce a 92
average to a 90. because Krista basically has nine test grades of 92. It's always a good idea
to estimate first on questions like this so you have an idea of what the answer may be. So If
you take a look at the lowest score in the answer choices, 72, you can average nine 92s
one 72 to get 2X92472
and one 72 to get $£92*72 «99,
21. C. Because the £2 symbol is representing a division sign, only Choice (C) produces a whole
number: 3 =1
3
22. E, Simplify this equation first by dividing both sides by 6: (x + ») = 15. Then, check the
answer choices, For Choice (E). if is 15 and y is positive, then there's nothing y could be
to make the equation true
23, D. 9.09 is closest to 9.1, because 0.09 rounds up to 0.1, It's also only one b
from 9.1 (9.09 + 0,01 = 9.1,
24, A. For this problem, you have to check the answer choices. For Choice (A), to find out
whether 65 can be written as 3x + 2, set it equal to that expression: 3x + 2 - 65. Then sim-
pliiy: 3x = 63, so x= 21, Because 21 is a whole number, you know that Choice (A) is correct.
25, B, This right telangle is a special right triangle: a 30-60.90 right triangle (the degree mea
sures of the inside angles are 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees). You can prove this,
because the hypotenuise (the side opposite the right angle) is twice as long as the shortest
side, The shortest angle of a triangle is opposite its shortest side. Because you know the
angles are 30, 60, and 90 degrees, and x is opposite the side measuring 3 centimeters,
x must be 30 degrees.

Section 3: Reading Comprehension
1, D, Although the passage mentions that Kava is a great vacation spot, the goal and overall
purpose of the passage Is to describe some of the different weather patterns on the islan
specifically the rainfall levels in different areas of the island.
2. C. Kaual is called the Garden Island because the raintall makes the island lush and green.
‘The passage doesn’t say anything about crops, farms, oF soil, so you can rule out Choices
(A), ®). and (E). Although many unusual species of plants may in fact be on the island, the
assayte doesn’t mention this either, so rule out Choice (D) as well,
3, B. The only beach mentioned in the passage is Poipu, and the passage notes that Poipu is
often called sunny Poipu. The other answer choices are all towns in Kau.
4, E. To answer this question, ask yourself what the most unusual feature mentioned in the
passae is. Walaleale is one of the wettest spots on earth, so Choice (E) is correct.
Although the passage mentions rainfall percentages and sunny locations for some of the
other answer choices. these features aren't necessarily unique from many other places in
the world,
