Introduction
Disaster management means planning, organizing, and taking actions to deal with disasters. It helps reduce damage
to people, property, and the environment. Disasters may happen suddenly or slowly, and good management saves
lives and restores normal life.
Types of Disasters
1. Natural Disasters: Caused by nature, like earthquakes, floods, cyclones, droughts, and landslides.
2. Man-made Disasters: Caused by humans, like industrial accidents, fires, chemical leaks, nuclear accidents, or
terrorism.
Natural Disasters Man-made Disasters
Earthquake Fire
Flood Chemical Accident
Cyclone Terrorism
Phases of Disaster Management
Disaster management has four main phases:
• Preparedness: Planning and training before a disaster.
• Mitigation: Steps to reduce disaster damage (e.g., earthquake-resistant buildings).
• Response: Actions during or right after a disaster to help people.
• Recovery: Restoring normal life and rebuilding affected areas.
Preparedness Mitigation Response Recovery
Disaster Management in India
India has the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) which plans policies and coordinates efforts to
reduce disaster risks. Government teams, armed forces, medical teams, and volunteers work together during
emergencies to help affected people.
Role of Students
Students help spread awareness and participate in relief activities. They can guide others, help in drills, and learn
basic first aid to save lives. Being alert and educated about disasters can make communities safer.

Conclusion
Disaster management is important to reduce the loss of life and property. With planning, awareness, teamwork, and
active student participation, we can overcome disasters and keep communities safe.
