Question 1 (25 marks)
Read the case study and answer the question that follows:
DEG Design and the IT Policy Gap
Background:
DEG Design is a growing graphic design company based in South Africa, known for its creative
solutions and commitment to customer satisfaction. However, the company has not yet
implemented a formal IT policy to govern the use of technology and social media by its
employees. This oversight has become a significant concern, especially in light of recent
events involving Nash, one of its employees.
Scenario:
Nash, a dedicated and enthusiastic graphic designer, has been facing difficulties with a
particular client who frequently requests changes to design concepts after they have been
finalised. This ongoing challenge has caused significant frustration for Nash, who also runs a
YouTube channel where he shares his music and opinions on various topics. Although Nash
is not a major influencer, he has a moderate following of about two thousand people across
different social media platforms.
After a particularly frustrating meeting with the client, where further last-minute changes
were demanded, Nash decided to vent his frustrations publicly on his YouTube channel. In
his video, he named the client and his employer, DEG Design, while expressing his
dissatisfaction with the situation. This video quickly attracted attention, eliciting mixed
reactions from viewers and raising serious concerns within DEG Design.
The management at DEG Design is now worried about the potential risks associated with
Nash’s public outburst, especially given the absence of an IT policy. The situation raises
critical questions about employee conduct, client confidentiality and the broader
implications for the company’s reputation and legal standing.

Question 3 (25 marks)
Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow.
Nulu Outsourcing
Nulu Outsourcing is a company that provides IT-enabled business processes, application
services and infrastructure solutions for business outcomes, along with general IT support.
The IT support desk at Nulu Outsourcing is responsible for both internal support within the
company and basic IT support for its clients. The team consists of eight members, with Gavin
as the team leader.
Recently, the team has been experiencing significant internal conflict. Two team members,
Sonja and Dev, have separately approached Gavin, expressing concerns about ticket
completion rates and the time taken to resolve issues. Sonja has accused Dev of being slow
and inefficient, while Dev feels that Sonja rushes through tickets without fully resolving
underlying issues. The tension between them has led to increased competitiveness, affecting
the overall team dynamics.

Nulu Outsourcing
Gavin has tried to address the issues by having individual discussions with Sonja and Dev but
the situation has only worsened. Sonja has begun undermining Gavin's authority during
meetings, challenging his decisions openly. Dev, on the other hand, has started arriving late
to work and missing daily meetings, which further disrupts team cohesion.
As the situation escalates, other team members have become more disengaged and the
overall performance of the IT support desk has declined. Gavin is feeling overwhelmed and
is considering stepping back, hoping the situation will resolve itself. However, he is also aware
that his passive approach might further deteriorate the team's morale and productivity.
To complicate matters, Nulu Outsourcing is in the process of expanding its operations, which
will require the IT support desk to take on additional responsibilities. This expansion
necessitates a well-functioning and cohesive team, making it crucial for Gavin to address the
current issues effectively.

edition. Cape Town: Oxford University Press Southern Africa.
3.1 Identify and explain the current stage of team development at the IT support desk
according to Tuckman’s model (Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, Adjourning).
Justify your answer with examples from the case study. (4)
3.2 Discuss the most worrying features of the team’s current dynamics. How do these issues
impact the overall effectiveness of the team? (6)
3.3 Evaluate Gavin’s current approach to leadership and conflict management. What are the
potential consequences of his passive response to the issues within the team? (4)
3.4 Suggest two strategies Gavin could implement to resolve the conflict between Sonja and
Dev and improve overall team cohesion. Justify why these strategies would be effective.
(4)
3.5 How could Gavin ensure that both Sonja and Dev feel more empowered and motivated
in the workplace? Propose specific actions and explain how they could lead to positive
changes in the team’s dynamics. (4)
3.6 Considering the planned expansion of Nulu Outsourcing, how can Gavin prepare his team
to handle increased responsibilities effectively? Identify at least two areas of focus and
explain their importance. (3)
