1.0 INTRODUCTION

M/s Technocrafts Electric Pvt Ltd plans construction of fire water tank at Veshere, Bhiwandi

Maharashtra. The work of geotechnical investigation was awarded to Reliable Engineering.

The field work and laboratory tests for the geotechnical investigation were completed by

Reliable Engineering in September2025. This final report prepared by Reliable Engineering

presents results of the geotechnical investigation along with foundation recommendations

for the proposed structure.

2.0 EXPLORATION PROGRAM

2.1 Exploration Scope

Two boreholes (BH-1 and BH-2) were completed at the site as illustrated on the Borehole

Location Plan in the Annexure.

2.2 Subsurface Conditions

Subsurface profile at this site consists of backfill material overlying residual soil underlain by

basalt bedrock. Encountered soil/rock layers are described below;

LAYER I: BACKFILL/CONCRETE

Backfill material, consisting mostly of clay and boulders were encountered at existing ground

surface in the borehole. The lower boundary of this layer was encountered at a depth of

0.40mbelow existing ground surface.

LAYER II: RESIDUAL SOIL/MURRUM

Residual soil, consisting mostly of brownish murrum was encountered below fill layer in the

boreholes. Based on standard penetration tests conducted within this layer consistency of

cohesive soil varied between stiff to hard. The lower boundary of this layer was encountered

at a depth of 4.5m below existing ground surface.

LAYER III: BASALT BEDROCK

Grayish basalt bedrock was encountered below residual soil layer in boreholes. The bedrock

was varied between completely weathered to highly weathered generally improving with

depth. Core Recoveries in the bedrock layer varied between 61% and 90%, and Rock

Quality Designations (RQDs) varied between 53% to 85%. The boreholes were terminated

in this layer at a depthof10.0mbelow existing ground surface.

2
2.3 Ground water Levels

Groundwater accumulation in boreholes was monitored during and after completion of

drilling activities. Groundwater was encountered at depths of 2.60m to 2.80 m below existing

ground surface in boreholes. Seasonal and annual fluctuations in ground water levels can

be expected.

3
3.0 FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS

Spread/Raft foundation recommendations for proposed structure are given in table A below;

TABLE A

2.0 m to 3.0 m 35 t/m 2916 t/m3
4.5 m to 10.0 m 150 t/m2 12500 t/m3
Note: Hard rock can be identified as it offers complete refusal to bucket excavators.

Excavation sides should be sloped at a maximum slope of 1:1 (450) (horizontal: vertical) or

flatter within top soil and murrum. In weathered basaltic rock the safe slope angle of 700

shall be maintained. If the open spaces are less, then some suitably designed temporary

enabling scheme shall be implemented.

Uniformity in sub-stratum can be delineated upon completion of foundation excavations. It is

recommended to verify subsurface soil stratum by experienced practicing geotechnical

engineer before completion of footings/foundations. The use of hydraulic excavators should

be made carefully so as not disturb the founding strata by its sharp-edged teeth.

4
3.1Foundation Protection

Results of chemical analysis on groundwater samples enclosed in the Annexure, indicate

that the site falls under Class 1 for sulphate concentrations (Ref. 1, Table 4, clause 8.2.24

& 9.1.2, pg. 19) and chloride concentrations (Ref. 1, Table 7, clause 8.2.5.2, pg. 21). A

‘Moderate’ (Ref. 1, Table 3, clause 8.2.2.1 & 3.5.3.2, pg. 18) Exposure Condition was

assigned to this site. Therefore only following normal precautions are recommended to

protect subsurface concrete and reinforcement(Ref. 1, Table 5, clause 6.1.2, 8.2.4.1 &

9.1.2, pg. 20)

Type of Cement: OPC or PPC

Minimum Grade of Reinforced Concrete: M25

Minimum Cement Content for spread footings: 300 kg/m3

Maximum Water Cement Ratio: 0.50

Minimum Cover to Reinforcement: 50mm

5
4.0 FIELD EXPLORATION PROCEDURES

The sub-surface investigation was completed generally as per IS: 1892-1979. The field

investigation was carried out using a rotary machine. Casing was used to support sides of

borehole until sufficiently stiff strata was encountered. Standard Penetration Tests (i.e. SPT)

were carried out in soil in accordance with IS 2131-1981. Using this procedure, a 2” outside

diameter split-barrel sampler is driven into the soil by 63.5 kg. weight falling through 75 cm

height. After an initial set of 15cm, the number of blows required to drive the sampler an

additional 30 cm, is known as the “penetration resistance” or “N value”.

When SPT refusal was obtained in hard strata, rock coring was done using diamond bit and

double tube core barrel to obtain rock samples. Percent Rock Core Recovery and Rock

Quality Designation (%RQD) were determined. % RQD = 100 x Sum of length of rock

pieces in cms, each having lengths greater than 10cms/Total length of core run.

Sincerely,

Reliable Engineering.

Net Ultimate Bearing Capacity = qu = cNc + q (Nq – 1) + 0.5 B N s (Refn. 3, Table
4-1)

Where,
q = Overburden Pressure (i.e. submerged unit weight x depth of foundation)
c = Cohesion
B = Minimum Width of foundation = 1m
’ = submerged unit weight of soil = 0.80
Nc, Nq, N = Terzaghi’s Bearing capacity factors
Sc, sq, s = Shape factors = Conservatively assumed as 1, 1, and 0.6, respectively
D = Minimum depth of Footing =3.0m

Minimum SPT N value obtained in boreholes = 50

Corresponding friction angle = 40o(Reference No. 3)
Corresponding Nc=5.14, Nq=64, N=109 (Reference 3, IS:6403-1981);

Substituting these values in the above equation;

q ultimate=qu =[0x5.14x1]+[3.0x0.8x(64-1)x1]+[0.5x1x0.8x109x0.6]=0+150+26 =176 t/m2

Where,
q0 = Footing Pressure = 35 t/m2
B’ = B/2 (Where B is the width of pressure distribution
μ = Poisson’s ratio = 0.3
E = Modulus of Elasticity
Is = Influence Factor (Obtai5ned from Table 5-2, Reference No. 3)
If = Depth Factor (Obtained from Figure 5-7, Reference No. 3)
m = 4 for center of footing

Very conservatively assuming weathered bedrock within the full influence zone of
footings:
E value for over-consolidated sand = 105(N)+4000 (Reference No. 3)
Therefore, for a SPT N value of 50, E=9250 t/m2

L’ = 3/2 =1.50, B’ = 3/2 =1.5, H=10m, and D=1.5m

Therefore, M=L/B=1; and N=H/B’=4 and D/B=1.0
Corresponding, Is = 0.43, Conservative If = 1.0 (From Table 5-2, Reference 3)
