Mech Week 1

The ME301 course on Mechanisms, taught by Dr. Abdurrahim DAL, aims to teach students the concepts and functions of basic mechanisms, including kinematic analysis and gear trains. The course covers various topics such as degrees of freedom, position, velocity, and acceleration analysis, along with practical applications using MATLAB/Simscape. Assessment includes homework, a midterm exam (40%), and a final exam (60%).

Introduction to Mechanisms

 The World of the Mechanisms

 The Theory of Machines and Mechanims is an applied science that is used to
understand;
 The relationships between the geomtry and motion of the parts of a machine and/or
mechaisms

 The forces that produce these motions

 Science of Mechanics deals with;

 Motion

 Time

 Force
Introduction to Mechanisms

 The World of the Mechanisms

 Kinematics: deals with motion

 Position, displacement

 Velocity, rotational speed

 Accelaration

 Jerk

 Kinetics: deals with force producing the motion

 Note: In this course, all of the mechanisms parts will be assummed the rigid body
Introduction to Mechanisms

 The World of the Mechanisms

 Theory of the Rigid Body

 If the distance between point A and B, L, doesn’t change, the body is rigid.

 Some Definiations

 MACHINES:
 An apparatus using mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite
function and together performing a particular task.
 Combination of resistant bodies so arranged that by their means the mechanical forces
of nature can be compelled to do work accompanied by certain determinate motions.

 MECHANSIMS: Assemblage of resistant bodies, connected by movable joints, to

form a closed kinematic chain with one link fixed and having the purpose of
transforming motion.
Introduction to Mechanisms

 The World of the Mechanisms

 Some Definiations

 STRUCTURE: A structure is also a combination of resistant (rigid) bodies connected

by joints, but the purpose of a structure (such as a truss) is not to do work or to
transform motion, but to be rigid.
