Sound Worksheet

The worksheet covers key concepts related to sound, including the relationship between pitch and frequency, loudness and amplitude, and the effects of temperature on sound speed. It also addresses specific questions about sound wave properties, such as wavelength and infrasonic frequencies. Additionally, it explains phenomena like echoes and the reason for hearing thunder after seeing lightning.

Gr 8 - SOUND – WORKSHEET
I. Answer in one word or sentence:
1. Explain how pitch and loudness are related to frequency and amplitude.
Pitch: The pitch of a sound is determined by its frequency. Higher frequency sounds have a higher pitch, while
lower frequency sounds have a lower pitch.
Loudness: The loudness of a sound depends on the amplitude of the sound wave. Larger amplitude waves
produce louder sounds, while smaller amplitude waves produce softer sounds.
2. What is the time period of a sound wave with a frequency of 100 Hz?
T = 1/f = f =100Hz.
T = 1/ 100 = 0.01Sec
3. What is the term for the distance between two consecutive compressions or rarefactions in a sound
wave?
Wavelength
4. What do we call the bouncing back of sound waves from a surface?
Echo
5. What is the effect of sound when it travels through a medium?
Vibration
6. Why does sound travel faster in solids than in gases?
Answer: Sound travels faster in solids because the particles in solids are more tightly packed, allowing
vibrations to transfer more quickly.
7. A simple pendulum makes 20 oscillations in 40 seconds. What is the time period of the oscillation?
Time period = Total Time / No. of oscillation = 40/ 20 = 2 sec.
8. What is the term for sound waves with frequencies below 20 Hz?
Infrasonic
II. Reason the following:
9. Temperature of air affect the speed of sound.
The speed of sound increases with an increase in temperature. This is because, as the temperature rises, the
molecules in the air move faster, allowing sound waves to travel more quickly.
10. Why do we hear thunder after seeing lightning?
Light travels much faster than sound. Light from the lightning reaches our eyes almost instantly, but sound
from the thunder takes longer to travel because sound waves travel at a slower speed. Therefore, we see the
lightning before we hear the thunder.
