All of my books are more than they seem.
My stories,
are about finding yourself and your own inner
strength.
No one was dealt the perfect set of cards and
all of our lives have their ups and downs.
In the end, it’s your own choices and your own
strengths that pave your way.
I want to dedicate this book to my
husband Rick. There are no words to
describe my love for you, but I want to
say, Thank you, for WANTING me.
Also, I want to say thanks, to my
parents, my amazing kids, my crazy
aunt, and all my friends for all of your
constant support. Thank you, for all the
hours you have had to listen to me about
the insane ideas in my head.

Waking up I feel disoriented and confused. The extreme cold
surrounding me makes me shiver all over. Shaking my head, I try to
clear the fuzziness in my brain. “What the hell has happened to me
and where am I at!” I feel like I have been run over by a carriage.
I’m surrounded by the smell of fresh blood and it’s making my
mouth drool as my body searches for sustenance. As my mind
clears, I realize that I’m not alone I can hear others around me.
Some crying, others whimpering in pain, their immense grief pulls at
my own memories and emotions.
I don’t feel like myself, it’s like I have been put into someone
else’s body. I force my eyes open and blink rapidly attempting to see
into the extreme darkness surrounding me. I have never had trouble
seeing in the dark before, as a vampire, the darkness had become
my day. But, I can’t see anything. I try to move my hands in front of
my face, but my arms are stretched uncomfortably tight above my
head. As my mind gradually wakes up, I realize my body is aching all
over. I grit my teeth to keep from screaming. I have never
experienced this unusually lingering pain.
I can’t move my arms at all, for the thick bands I feel strapped
tightly to my wrists. My hands feel like a thousand needles are being
inserted into them as I try to move my fingers. The feeling of
dampness soaking through my dress makes me realize that I’m on
my knees. I try to stand up, but my legs are completely numb where
they have been folded underneath me for however long I have been
here. I hate this feeling of weakness, how do humans live like this?
After struggling for what seems like forever, I finally manage to
get my legs under me. I stand up slowly trying not to put any more
strain on my arms than I have to. Rattling chains echo in the
darkness around me as I straighten up. I hold back the scream that’s
lodged in my throat as the blood runs back into my arms. Taking a
deep breath, I pull on the cuffs around my wrists, but they won’t
budge. The skin underneath them is chaffed and torn and I can feel
fresh blood running down my arms.
Swaying on unsteady feet, I look around and finally notice a
light in the distance. I can’t tell if I'm in a dungeon or a cave, but
I'm definitely underground. The overwhelming odor of mold and
dampness is thick in the air.
I feel others around me, but my mind can’t seem to focus on
where they’re at. Even though I have always been able to control my
own body temperature, this constant cold feels like it has seeped
clear to my bones and I feel myself shiver again. I try moving
around, but the chains attached to my wrists only let me go a couple
of feet one way or another. Taking both hands, I yank hard on one
side of the chain trying to break it out of the ceiling, but it won’t
budge. Pain engulfs me and the abrupt strain of my muscles,
suddenly makes me feel lightheaded. I'm as weak as a newborn
kitten.
It almost feels like I haven’t fed in weeks. Somehow the
powers I have taken for granted my whole life are no longer
working, or they have been blocked by something. Just how long
have I been here? The smell of blood is so thick in the air around me
I can almost taste it. I don’t know if it’s mine I’m smelling or
someone else’s, but it makes me eager to feed.
I suddenly hear movement to my left and then a moan. “Hello,
is anyone there?” Even though I thought I was whispering. My voice
seems extremely loud in the echo of the darkness.
The sound of sobbing becomes louder with the unexpected
sound of my voice. Then another voice farther away whispers loudly.
“Stop it you, damn idiot. You know what happens when he hears
one of us. Please, for the love of God, stop your wailing before you
get one of us killed.”
“Who is there? And who are you talking about?” I try to
whisper into the room towards the voice.
Whoever it is actually starts to laugh. “Oh, you poor girl, you
don’t remember, do you? Don’t take offense, most of them never do.
He has some kind of mind control. If you can keep from it, don’t look
him in the eye. It took me a few times watching him with the other
girls to understand how he was controlling us so easily.”
“I have been here the longest if you consider a couple weeks a
long time, but now that he has you, he will lose interest in me.
Thank God, maybe my prayers have been answered after all and he
will be merciful, killing me swiftly. I hate to say this but
unfortunately for you, you’re his newest toy. Whatever you do, don’t
scream, the longer you hold out the longer you will live. Or maybe,
just go ahead and scream at the top of your lungs, no one wants to
live after this anyway. You must have been in the wrong place at the
wrong time. That seems to be the common ground between all of us
so far.”
I feel like I’m talking to the walls. I can’t see anything, “Who
are you talking about? And no, I don’t remember how I got here.
Where are we exactly?”
I can hear the girl moving around in the distance. “You will
find out soon enough who he is, or I should say what he is. The only
advice I can give you is, that you better start praying and it doesn’t
matter to what God either. Because this place was created for his
sick pleasures and no one ever leaves, alive that is. This is his room
of horrors! You’ll know why it’s called that soon enough, and it won’t
do you any good to fight him. If anything he will just make it last
longer. I fought him with everything I had in the beginning. It
doesn’t matter how strong you are, he always breaks us in the end.”
I didn’t even comprehend everything she said before it all
started rushing back. I was standing in the den surrounded by my
family. We had all been rendered motionless by a power unknown to
us. Then he emerged right in front of us like he walked out of the
walls.
The Ancient wanted revenge, one life for another he said, but I
know his black sickened heart really just craved the hunt. Any
excuse, to tear something, or someone apart, and my family had
just got his attention.
He went slowly from person to person. Taunting each and
everyone I had come to love as he inspected each of us for his dark
pleasures. I remember panicking when I see him reach out touching
the girls intimately. I knew neither of my brothers would survive the
dawn if one of their wives were taken. After spending centuries
alone, they had finally found love, but me, I was expendable. I
always had been, so I provoked him into taking me.
The Ancient sneered at me, his spit hitting me right in the face
as he grabs me off of my feet and into his arms. “Oh you, I will
enjoy breaking.” I remember screaming into my brother’s mind not
to Forget me! Then nothing, I don’t remember how I got here,
where ever this is, and I don’t know how long I have been out.
The second my mind clears. I try to flash away only to be
jerked against the chains holding me as my body rocks back and
forth on my heels. The pains in my arms worsen and I realize I'm
not healing either.
Reaching inside myself, I look for my brother’s familiar links
only to find nothing. It’s like they’re dead. There is nothing but
silence. Not even the familiar whispers of the ones before me. My
mind is blank now and I'm completely alone. I have no powers. I'm
as vulnerable as any human right now, with no way to escape, or
any way to heal myself.
I take a deep breath trying to calm my mind and reach out
again. The silence is something I have never experienced. From the
day of my birth, I could hear the whispers, sounds that almost drove
me to madness many times.
I feel myself start to panic, surely after me sacrificing myself
he wouldn’t have gone back and killed them anyway. They’re the
only hope I have, if they aren’t looking for me, then I am truly
alone. I don’t know why this suddenly bothers me. I have always
been a loner. I preferred my own company more than others most of
my life. I tried to keep myself completely self-sufficient because I
always knew this was coming for me.
A prophecy was whispered in a dark alley to my mother right
before my birth. An old woman was walking down the street in front
of Mother and she stumbled on the cracked pavement. Mother
reached out and caught her before she hit the ground. The woman
smiled and thanked her politely and then she suddenly put her hand
on my Mother’s belly. Mother didn’t know at the time that she was
pregnant with me, but somehow the old woman did. The woman
looked up and whispered.
“There is a great evil coming for this child. She will be one of
the most beautiful in the land. Men will fight for her, and women will
hate her. Love will never touch her heart because she will have a
soul of ice. Her beauty will only be skin deep and her cold ways will
mark her as uncaring and cruel. She will shun anyone who loves her,
choosing to keep herself apart. Relying only on herself, she will have
no need for the comfort or love of others.”
“Affection will not be welcomed, for she feels she doesn’t need
it. However, she will secretly lurk within the shadows of the ones she
denies her love. Living her life through them, for she knows the
darkness will only come quicker if she chooses to care for another.”
“She will pray for this task to pass her by, her choice is
unknown, as to whether she will save herself or the others. She will
choose never to be close to another because if she can withstand
the darkness long enough. She will walk in the light one day and
know love, from one who has never known love himself.”
I remember how upset mother was when she told me this
story. I honestly could have cared less at the time. I had shrugged a
hug of hers away one particular evening and I could see the hurt in
her eyes. I always got upset if she tried to hug me or if she tried to
tuck me into bed. I hated her fussing over everything I was doing
good or bad. When she was gone, I regretted at least not
pretending I needed her, but I needed no one. Now, here I am taken
by an unimaginable evil like I have never known. A sacrifice I
couldn’t avoid even before birth. The old woman was right, so far. I
just pray I'm strong enough to finally see the light.
The girl is still talking, but I have only heard pieces of what
she said. “What’s your name,” I ask into the darkness?
“My name doesn’t matter, neither one of us will be alive long
enough to care!”
“Humor me!”
“Maria, my name is Maria.”
“I’m Victoria, how did you and the other girls come to be
here?”
“I have no idea about the others, but I was stupid enough to
catch a ride. I work, or should I say, I worked at an Inn. It wasn’t
very busy because it was off the main road, on easy days they would
let me off early. I lost track of time that evening and was running
late after visiting my mother. I saw this fancy carriage coming down
the road and I even stepped out of the way so it could pass. I was
really shocked when it stopped just past me. He opened the door
and asked where I was headed. After I told him, he said it was on
his way and then offered me a ride. Well, as you can see the rest is
history.”
“Won’t anyone be looking for you?”
“It doesn’t matter if they are. No one will find me in time. I'm
already dying anyway. I’m sure the owners of the Inn think I just ran
off with a boyfriend or something. Everyone always thinks the worst
about a person. I just hate that my Mom won’t have anyone to help
take care of her, she won’t last long without me.”
I didn’t reply because I had no comfort to offer her.
﴾Chapter Two:﴿
The swift movement of my chains jerking me straight up into
the air startles me. Girls start to scream as the cavern becomes lit all
of a sudden. I struggle to touch the ground as my wrists feel like
they’re going to be torn from my body.
Finally being able to see where I am runs a chill down my
back. I'm in an open cavern, something man-made. It may have
been an old dungeon or even a jail at one time. Large doors hang
uneven from the ceiling and long chains hang from the walls. Some
of the chains are still wrapped around fresh corpses while others
have deteriorating bones slumped below them on the floor.
There are women in different stages of Hell all around me.
Abuse, like I have never comprehended, how could one living soul
do this to another. Their forms will be forever scarred into my mind
as I look around. Bile rises in my throat, there isn’t a single
unmarred spot on their skin, bruises and cuts mark their young
bodies from head to toe. Huge pieces of skin torn from their tender
breast and scratches mangle the inside of their thighs where they
have been raped repeatedly.
I try to look behind me, but the chains keep me securely in
one spot. I swing my legs out, this only pulls on my wrist harder, but
this doesn’t stop me. I twist and turn harder trying to free myself
until the laughter starts.
I don’t see him at first; it’s just his voice floating in the mist
above my head.
“You can yank on those chains all day and they won’t budge,
Victoria. Not even an Ancient like myself can break one. They are
not from this world and you are the first I have had the pleasure to
use them on.”
As he gets closer, I see one of the girls shrink back against the
wall she is chained to. She is sobbing so loud that it is echoing
through the chamber. I blink and he is there right in front of her, his
flashing abilities apparently not muted by the room around us.
He looks back at me, “Victoria, you will have to excuse me for
a second.” He grabs the girl up by her hair and rips into her throat
with his fangs, sucking loudly at her life force as she struggles
weakly in his arms. When he rips his mouth free he simply tears her
head off then throws it to the ground kicking it out of his way.
Taking a silk handkerchief out of his pocket he wipes the blood from
his mouth and hands and then walks calmly towards me. I try to
blank out my expressions, but I know he saw the horror on my face.
“I do love their screams, but the constant crying gets nerve-
wracking. How are you enjoying your new accommodations?”
“I love what you have done with the place you sick Bastard!
Nothing like a few heads lying around to make the place more
enticing.”
Marcus just laughs, “Yes it’s quite delightful, isn’t it? I’m sure
you will adjust in time, after all, we have nothing but quality times to
look forward to, now don’t we?”
He sighs, “I’m sure you have a million questions, like why
you’re as weak as a human. Just to ease your mind, I have installed
wards around the castle that dampen your abilities. These of course
will make you weak, but you still won’t die as quickly as a human.
I’m sure you have already figured out that most of your other traits
no longer respond to you. And, I wouldn’t waste precious energy
trying to contact your family. The only thing that can come through
those doors without my permission is another like myself.”
“And, I can assure you Tyberius will never grace this place with
his presence. He detests everything about me. I have no idea why,
after all, I'm a model citizen.” I watch him straighten his sleeve up
on his jacket, like he was standing in a parlor. “Anyway, I’m sorry it
took me so long to come to you. I hate to leave company hanging
around alone, but I still had some unfinished business, when it
comes to your family.”
I start to speak, but he holds up his hand and nothing comes
out of my mouth.
“Now, before you think the absolute worst of me, I didn’t kill
them. I kept my word, but let’s just say they will never find you.
Every time they get close to you, the spell I put on them, will lead
them in another direction, and in time, they will Forget you
altogether. You see, I don’t share my toys with others. Once you
belong to me, there will be no other for you.”
“I honestly don’t know why I never took one of my own for a
pet! The humans don’t last long enough, they always leave me too
soon and I have to hunt for another. With you though, I will have a
lot more time to play.”
“I know I'm not your favorite person right now and like all the
others before you, you wish for my untimely death. But, even in the
very rare chance of my unforeseen death, you will still be trapped
here. I'm so looking forward to our many years together.”
He is standing so close to me that I can smell the cologne on
his body and the blood on his breath. The Ancient was tall and
broad-shouldered, but without any real bulk behind his height.
Shoulder length brown hair brushed the collar of his expensive suit
and his black eyes flashed with pure joy as he walked slowly around
me.
“So old demented one, do you have a name, or is Ancient
Psycho appropriate?”
“Oh, she is strong enough to speak, marvelous!” He laughs,
clapping his hands together like a child. “Marcus Anthony Darverius,
your humble servant, Ma’am.” He bows in front of me, like we’re at a
social gathering or something.
“Humble isn’t a word I would have associated with you. A sick,
demented, maniac and let’s not forget the word coward in there.
Those words seem a lot more fitting and I just met you! I wonder
how much larger my vocabulary will be in a couple days.” I hear one
of the girl’s whimper as the words leave my mouth.
“Now, now, let’s don’t start our relationship off this way. You
don’t want to make me angry, Victoria.” I watch as he walks from
girl to girl in the room. He touches one on the top of the head
smoothing her hair down. Then another he caresses her shoulder
tenderly. There are three others in the room besides me that I can
actually see. I have no idea which one I was talking to earlier. The
last one he caresses her cheek and she never flinches. She just
stares at the wall in front of her. He reaches down and raises her
head up so she has to look at him. I immediately try to take his
attention away from her.
“So, you’re saying this is your idea of hanging out with friends
or is this the only way you can keep females around. Tie them up, so
they don’t run from your sickness?”
He strokes her face, the caress of a lover, not a killer. Marcus
acts like he doesn’t hear me talking at all. He just stares down at the
girl. Then I watch in horror as his fingernails start to grow and he
pushes them into her eyes, not hard enough to kill her, but enough
to destroy her eyes. The scream that leaves her throat pierces the
air around us. I fight against the chains holding me. I have never felt
this helpless in my entire life.
“Hey Asshole, you’re going to kill one of your toys if you keep
that up.” I scream at him.
Marcus lets go of the girl and she falls unconscious to the
ground. Then he turns slowly towards me licking his fingers. “You
need to worry about your own skin, Little Dove.” Then he is gone.
﴾Chapter Three:﴿
Lucas paces the floor, his hair sticking up all over the place
where he had run his hands through it so many times. Red blood
streaks line his face as the silent tears leak from his eyes.
Tavish stands alone looking out the window into the darkness
completely emotionless. The jokester of the family looked like a cold-
blooded killer standing there ready to strike at any time.
Eve sat on the couch with Emma watching her sister’s eyes
move behind her eyelids where she was mentally connected to one
of her hounds. Rage had his head lying in Emma’s lap, both of them
communicating with Wrath. Their minds were intertwined with
Wrath’s as he searched for Victoria.
Lucas spoke up first. “Do any of you actually think Wrath will
find her?”
“I think in time, he will,” Emma opens her eyes and speaks up
quietly. “It’s only been a few weeks and to be honest I'm worried
about him. He is pushing himself beyond his limits. He may be one
of the baddest things on Earth but even he needs rest. Right now he
is our only hope. The Ancient could have flashed her anywhere in
the world. Wrath is already halfway across the country now.” Emma
moved Rage out of the way gently and walked over to Lucas
stopping him in his tracks. She wiped the tears from his face.
“Dammit Emma, I feel like a complete ass. All these years I
thought she stayed away because she hated us. She just popped in
