APPA

An amigurumi crochet pattern by MikaVD

Name: Appa

Difficulty:

Materials:
• Crochet needle (3mm)
• 3mm yarn in light beige, warm gray, dark gray, and black
(I use Schachenmayr Catania yarn in 105, 406, 429, and 110)
• Yarn needle(s)
• Scissors
• Stuffing
• Brown Safety eyes (mine are 12mm)
• Glasshead pins
• Hot glue gun

Size:
Appa is 33 cm / 13 inch long and 14 cm / 5.5 inches tall

Abbreviations:
• R = Round/row
• Ch = Chain
• St = Stitch
• Sc = Single Crochet
• Sl St = Slip Stitch
• Hdc = Half-Double Crochet
• Dc = Double Crochet
• Tc = Triple Crochet
• inc = Increase, 2 Single Crochet’s over 1 stitch
• dec = Decrease, 1 Single Crochet over two stitches
• BLO = Back loop only
• FLO = Front loop only

Appa is an easy, but also a very large project. He is very straightforward

to crochet and construct, but it will take some time to complete. If you
want a fluffy Appa, you can choose to substitute the light beige yarn
with a fluffy yarn. Do note that if you choose to do this, make sure that
the other yarn colors as well as your crochet hook all match the fluffy
yarns thickness/weight.

HEAD ASSEMBLY

Sew the two head halves together, but don’t sew it

completely shut yet. You want to leave a hole in
the back of the head for now. The top half should
have a row of exposed loops on the inside. Make
sure to sew into these.

Make two ovals:

R1: (in light beige) Sc x6 in magic ring [6]
R2: (inc x1, hdc x1 then dc x1 in the same stitch,
dc x1 then hdc x1 in the same stitch) x2 [12] Sew into these loops!
End with a slip stitch, and weave the tail away.

Insert the eyes through the oval. Then, insert them

into the head, on the edges of the dark gray area.
Secure with a washer on the inside.

Stuff the head. Once you’re done, the head should

be like a squishy ball, but firm enough to maintain
its shape. Sew the head completely shut.

Glue the jaw right under the dark gray area. Then
glue the nose on top.

Sc around the entire thing for a clean edge. You should inc instead of Sc
in the corners to prevent buckling.
TOTAL ASSEMBLY 1/2

1. Sew the body to the head. Make sure

that the hump on the back of the
body faces upwards. To sew in a clean
circle, I used safety pins to outline a
circle of 54 stitches on the back of
the head beforehand.
2. Sew the tail onto the back of the
body. This time I used safety pins
outline an oval pattern on Appa’s butt
to help sew the tail on cleanly.
3. Glue (or sew) the belly under the
body and tail. Make sure it reaches all
the way from the head to the end of
the tail. Be patient with this and make
sure not to use too much glue. If any
excess glue squirts out between the
belly and the body, it can be quite
difficult to fix.
4. Sew the legs onto the body. Line
them up right next to the belly.
Again, I use the same strategy I used
with the head and tail, where I
outline a circle of 30 stitches with
safety pins before I start sewing
things in place.
TOTAL ASSEMBLY 2/2

1. Glue the ears on the sides of the

head, under the fur tufts.
2. Sew the horns in place onto the head.
They should be 2 rows above the fur
tufts, and placed somewhat between
the ears and eyes.
3. Glue 3 toes to each of the legs. Make
sure that the gray parts of the legs
and toes line up, to make for a cute
and complete footprint.
4. Glue the back markings onto the
back. I start off with glueing the flat
end on the end of the tail, and pin-
ning it in place so that the arrow is
placed neatly onto the head. Then I
glue it on bit by bit. Again, be patient
and don’t use too much glue at once.
5. As a final touch, use a little bit of glue
to glue the fur tufts around the head
downwards.
