INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATE
1. This paper consists of two compulsory questions. Each questions carries 25 marks.
2. All writings should be in blue or black ink, except for diagrams which must be in
pencil.
3. Mathematical tables and non-programmable calculators may be used.
4. Communication devices and any other unauthorised materials are not allowed in the
examination room.
5. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer booklet(s).
6. The following constants may be useful:
(i) The acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.8 m/s2.
(ii) Density of water = 1000 kg/m3.
This paper contains three (3) printed pages

1. In Mkali Food Industry Company (MFIC), you are given a task to determine the density of Liquid L,
you decide to perform an experiment by following the procedure:
(a) Balance the metre rule freely on a knife edge, to determine the centre of gravity G, and take a beaker
with liquid L given record its Initial volume (V1) and value of G
(b) Tie 100g slotted mass with wire given and suspend it at X=10cm from the centre of gravity G.
(c) On the opposite side, suspend the 50g mass using another wire and completely immersed in liquid L
inside the beaker record new volume as (V2) as shown in figure below.

(d) Adjust the position of the 50g mass inside the beaker containing liquid L until the metre rule is
balanced, record the distance from the pivot to 50g mass call it y.
(e) Repeat procedure (b) – (d) for value of X = 12cm, 14cm, 16cm and 20cm, for each record its
corresponding value of y.
Questions
(a) Tabulate your results.
(b) Plot the graph of y against x
(c) Determine the slope of the graph.
𝑦
(d) Use the value of slope in (iii) to determine the value of P and D from the following relation 𝑥 =
100𝑔 𝑃
(50𝑔−𝑃) and 𝐷 = ∆𝑉, where ∆𝑉 = 𝑉2 − 𝑉1 and give the physical meaning of P and D.
(e) Suggest why the 50g mass appear lighter in the oil and identify one real life use of this
principle.
(f) What is the aim of this experiment?
2. The aim of this experiment is to determine the refractive index n of a glass block.
Proceed as follows
(a) Fix the plane sheet of paper provided on the soft board using optical pins.
(b) Place the glass block on the sheet of paper so that the largest face is topmost as shown in figure
below and trace out the outlines of the glass block.
(c) Fix pins P₁ and P₂ onto the soft board such that the angle of incidence i = 25°, ensuring that AO is
less than one-third of AB.
(d) Place pins P₃ and P₄ so that they appear to be in line with the images of P₁ and P₂ when viewed
through the face CD of the glass block.

(e) Remove the block and trace the path of the refracted ray.
(f) Measure and record the distance L.
(g) Replace the block and repeat procedures (c) to (f) for angles of incidence i = 35°, 45°, 55°, and
65°.
(h) Tabulate all your results, including the calculated values of sin²i and 1/L².
(i) Plot a graph of sin²i (y-axis) against 1/L² (x-axis).
(j) Determine the slope s of the graph and the intercept C₁ on the sin²i axis.
(k) Calculate the refractive index n of the glass using the relation 𝑛 = √𝐶1 and find the breadth b of
√(−𝑠)
the glass block using the relation 𝑏 = .
