day her parents found out Miss Sullivan a teacher for the deaf and blind. Miss Sullivan gave Helen a dool to play on
the very first day and made some finger movements on her palm. Helen became success in doing it correctly. Soon she
learnt to spell. She spelt the words on her palm after touching the different objects. Her second stage of learning was
also based on sence of touch. She was able to speak through the movements of lips and the vibration in the throat. She
also learnt read and write with the Braille as well as ordinary typewirter. She also wrote poems and stories. After that
she joined the Redcliff college there she knew that there were obstacles in her way but she was very keen to overcome
them. In the college the lectures were spelt into her palm as swiftly as possible and would note down whatever she had
remembered went back home. She was the first blind, deaf person who got the graduation.

Miss Sullivan was a teacher for the deaf and blind. She taught Helen to spell the words through finger movements and
by touching different objects. She was very satisfied with Helen’s curiocity. Miss Sullivan would speak a word and say
Helen to touch her lips and throat slowly. Helen was trained to speak the words through the movements of lips and vib-
ration in throat by Miss Sullivan. She made learning easy by some method of teaching so Henen felt like play than work
Whenever anything delighted or interested Helen Miss Sullivan would talk to her as if she were a little girl herself. She
taught Helen to read and write with both Braille and ordinary typewriter. Even if her eyesight became weak Miss Sulliv-
an continued to help Helen. At last she became completely blind and sacrifice her eyesight for Helen.
(15) Devyani:
Devyani was Shukracharya’s daughter. She fell in love with Kach who was very young, handsome and intelligent. She
was deeply in love with him. So whenever the assurs tried to kill kach, Devyani requested his father to revive him and
when Kach wanted to return home Devyani asked him to marry her and return her love. But Kach told her that he loved
her as a sister. Devyani reminded him that it was her love that had saved him three times. But Kach said that he would
not commit a sin by marrying his sister. Devyani cursed him by saying that he would not be able to practice what he
had learnt.
(16) The assur’s attempts to kill Kach :
When the assurs knew that Kach was staying with Shukracharya to learn the magic mantra , they decided to kill him.
One day when Kach was grazing the cows in the jungle the assurs killed him and cut his body into pieces and fed
them to the wolves and jackals. But Shukracharya brought him back with his magic mantra. Once againg Kach was
collecting flowers the assurs killed him second time and ground his body into paste and mixed it with the water of the
ocean. But again Shukracharya brought him back to life. When assurs killed Kach third time, they burnt his body and
mixed the ashes with the divine wine that Shukracharya drank.
(17) Kach :
Kach was Brihaspati’s son. Dev told him to go to Shukracharya and learn the sanjivani vidya. He went there and lived
Shukracharya’s ashram and served him with devotion and won his favour. When assurs knew that they decided to kill
him. Everytime when he was killed he was brought back by Shukracharya. When he was brought back life to third time
he came out Shukracharya’s stomach and then he used his magic mantra to bring back his guru. When he wanted to
return home Devyani told him to marry with her,but Kach refused saying that she was his sister because both of them
came out from Shukracharya the same father. He did not want to do sin by marrying with her.
(18) House Sparrow :
The sparrow is a small, but friendly bird. it makes the atmosphere alive doing chirping continuously. it also likes to live
near human habitate. It also feels safe with us, but we have destroyed its home. We design our houses such a way that
a sparrow can’t enter into our house. As a result we see less sparrows now. We should prepare sparrow nest with the
help of cardboard boxes and feed them with grains and water. They definately attract to live among us. Really sparrow
is the most beautiful bird.
(19) The weaver bird’s nest :
In Gujarati the weaver bird is known as ‘sughari’. It is a small bird. This bird is gifted with the skill of weaving its nest
by the God. It selects long thread like grass leaves to build its nest. The male weaver bird builds the nest by taking
nearly 18 days to complete the nest. When the nest is half completed the male invites female for pairing by its songs.
If the female weaver bird accepts the nest both of them finish the nest. If she doesn’t the nest is anandoned. In such
way a male makes many and more nests during the nesting season.
(20) Migratory Birds :
From the cold regions of Europe almost every year thousands of birds came to india to spend winter. Birds like pelicans
cranes, various ducks and rosy pastors travel thousands of kilometres by flying in India. With the help of the sun they
find their way. While coming they travel in the morning and returning they fly in the evening. This kind of birds fly in
different patterns. Birds like cranes, ducks and geese fly in a formation of ‘V’ shape. Certain ducks, warblers and
flycatchers travel in group.
(21) Dr. Mrs. Shelat’s views on games and entertainment :
It is often heard that the children spend too much time in playing games and watching T.V. It badly effects their studies.
Mr. Shelat says that it is quite normal for the teenagers to get tempted to play and watch T.V.,but she advices that there
should be time limit for the both entertainment and studies. According to her total avoidance of games and T.V. is not
solution. But it is cruel and unnatural for the children. Parents should make sure that there should be a balance between
study and play hours. sometimes games and entertainment are the most essential for both kind of development physi-
cally and mentally. It is very helpful to reduce the stress and being a victom of depression.
(22) Lieutenant Blandford :
After reading a book named ‘Of Human Bondage’ in the training camp Leautetant saw some notes in woman’s handwrit-
ing. He could not believe that a woman could understand a man’s thoughts so well. He saw her name inside the cover of
the book and found her address and wrote a letter. They wrote to each other for almost thirteen months. While he was
waiting for her at the station, he saw a beautiful girl with the white rose he wanted to follow the girl, but he had deep
longing for the woman who had given him courage and strength. The woman he saw was old and plump yet he showed
her the book to introduce himself. He decided that their relationship was precious and a friendship for which he would
always be grateful. He stood before the woman saluted her and invited her for the dinner.
(23) Dr. Mackey’s views on Sharing - Importance of Sharing :
After hearing Mr.Suhani Mehta’s daughter’s problem who enjoys her studies but does not share anything about school
and studies with her parents. Dr. Mackey says that If sharing is missing, both the parents and children are responsible
for it. Acording to him sharing is the glue that binds family together. At the age of this level teenagers find it difficult to
share all the details related to their lives. Parents must consider this and decide their answers to their sharing. Negative
response from the parents discourage children. As well the children must read the intention of the parents. Not sharing
anything with the parents may lead to serious problems
(24) The end of the story ‘The Test Of True Love’ :
Seeing the two women Blandford’s attention was divided between them and felt a strong urge to follow the girl, But he
had a deep longing for the woman who had given him great courage and strength. He decide that thier relationship was
not love but a precious friendship for which he would always be grateful. He did not hesitate and introduce himself by
standing straight and saluting her with the book in his hand. When he asked her for dinner, the woman smiled and told
him that the young lady had asked her to wear the red rose and also asked if he invited her for dinner not to go and told
her that she was waiting for him at the restaurant across the street. And that was his test and and he passed in it and
proved that his love was true.
(25) The Valture :
We can see that the people do not like valtures because they eat carcasses and dead animals. But it is true that they
clean our surrounding by eating rotten dead bodies. They are also called scavengers. A vulture has a sharp beak. It
is designed to tear the flesh from dead bodies. In recent time very few valture can be seen. After using the medicine
named diclofenac to cure sick animals but when the animals die the vultures eat its bodies. This medicine is very harm
ful for them. So when they eat such flesh they slowly die withing a few days. Almost 97 % of valture population is lost
in this way.
(26) Miss Meynell :
Miss Meynell was a young woman who had written a book named ‘Of Human Bondage’ which Blandford read when he
was in a training camp. When he wrote a letter to her she replied and started to write each other for thirteen months. She
would write to him even when his letter did not arrive. Her words written in her letter gave him new strength and courage
When Blandford asked her for her photograph she refused him saying that if his feelings for her were real her looks
would not matter. If she was beautiful she would feel that he was attracted her by a beautiful face, If she was not she
would feel that he was writing to her because he was lonely. Both kind of love would displease her. When they met she
took a test of Blandford’s love and also passed him in the test.
(27) Dr. Manju Shroff’s views of food habits and studies : OR
Relations between food habits and studies :
Dr. Manju Shroff believes that there is a direct relation between the food we eat and the activities of our brain via metabo
lism. In our daily life style Heavy food directs the blood flow to the digestive system. In resulting into slowing down of
the brain activity. After eating heavy food we feel sleepy, lazy, and drowsy. This also effects our studies and regular acti-
vities. As a student we should eat light and easy food to digest easily and take enough soup, juice, daal, milk, chhas etc.
We should eat more and much of raw vegetables and fruits. We never believe in overeating.
(28) How to improve retention :
How to improve retention is a big problem faced by most of the students. Dr. Mansuri says that there is no fixed method
to improve retention. A student must know the way from which he /she learns. There are different learning styles like : -
listening, writing, drawing flowcharts and diagrams, discussion and reflective thinking etc. Every student need to know
which style suit him / her best for different subjects. A student should accept more than one style of learning to rememb-
er anything for longer time. But remember at least one thing that brain tonic do not work at all.
(29) Helen’s learning process :
At first Helen learnt to spell words with the help of finger movements on her palm. After touching different objects Helen
learnt to spell thier names on her palm. The second stage of learning was also based on the sense of touch. Her teacher
would speak a word and ask Helen to touch her lips and throat slowly. In this way Helen learnt to speak through
movements of lips and vibration in throat. At last she learnt to read raised letters and to write with both ordinary and
Braille typewriter. She also learnt Latin, German and arithmetic. After joining the Cambridge School for ladies she started
writing poems and stories. At Red Cliff college the lectures were spelled into her palm as rapidly as possible and would
note down whatever she remembered after going back home. She was the first deaf and blind person who had earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree.
