Indian Veterans in
NIGERIA
MESSAGE
from the
EDITOR Iqbal Singh
Greetings, Esteemed Veterans, and Corporate Leaders,
As we usher in a new month, we turn our gaze towards a continent of immense opportunity and a nation
rapidly establishing itself as an economic powerhouse: Nigeria. This month's feature theme, Indian
Veterans in Nigeria, delves into the compelling proposition of West Africa's largest economy as a prime
expatriate destination for our community, one where high-paying roles are not just available, but actively
seeking the unique skill set you possess.
The transition from military service to corporate life is a journey of continuous adaptation and growth.
Having successfully navigated the rigours of service, our veterans bring to the corporate world an
unparalleled combination of leadership, integrity, and complex project management expertise. Today, the
global economy is their new theatre of operations, and Nigeria, with its dynamic represents a 'high-gain'
posting.
Nigeria is a continental giant, driving substantial growth in sectors critical to its future—infrastructure
development, telecommunications, oil and gas, finance, and increasingly, security and risk management.
This robust, diverse economic landscape is precisely where the Indian veteran's expertise translates into
exceptional value and, consequently, high-value remuneration.
The demand is not simply for managers, but for leaders who can deliver results under pressure, establish
robust logistical chains, ensure high standards of discipline and governance, and manage multi-cultural
teams effectively. This is the Veteran Advantage. Companies operating in Nigeria, including numerous
Indian MNCs and major global players, recognise that the inherent traits of an Indian armed forces
officer—strategic thinking, crisis mitigation, and unwavering professionalism—are the cornerstones of
successful operations in a rapidly developing, often volatile market. We have interviewed five Indian
veterans working as expatriates in Nigeria. Read about their inspiring success stories.
A Special Feature an Interview with the ex-MD Of ECHS: In this issue, we are proud to present a Special
Feature Interview with the recently retired Managing Director (MD) of the Ex-Servicemen Contributory
Health Scheme (ECHS).The former MD shares deep insights into the structure and organization of
ECHS, the complex mechanism of its funding, the challenges it currently faces in scaling its services, and
the remedial measures and reformative steps being undertaken to enhance its efficiency and outreach. We
encourage you to read this essential feature to stay informed about a scheme fundamental to our post-
service life.
Whether your next 'posting' is in the bustling corporate corridors of Nigeria or contributing to the reform
of veteran welfare in India, your service continues to be a powerful, sought-after asset. We wish you
success in all your endeavours and look forward to hearing your stories of global achievement.
Jai Hind

Q How did you build a social support system for yourself in Nigeria as an expat ?
Breaking into an existing Veterans’ network is a great head start. Having family along is a
great support. Families build a network around colleagues’ families, Children’s friends
parents, with sports partners and with many other interest groups like music, art etc. Social
amalgamation just happens. Remain open and approachable. Many a time, I thought it was
like being in a large cantonment- all facilities, friendly neighbourhood and a rich life, all
within a limited area.
Q Tell us the role played by your family in supporting your professional career?
We experienced during the Service days importance of family support. The Indian social
system till a few decades ago had a system of extended family. It moved to nuclear family as
we were growing up. Thereafter, it’s the nuclear family around which our social system grew
to support us emotionally .
When you move out as expat, work pressure is usually quite high. One is expected to deliver
in a competitive and demanding environment. It’s the family which secures your social and
emotional needs.
It is not only at times of fun and socialising, but there are also times ofpersonal grief where
presence of family is most valuable.

to the Managing Director of ECHS for their valuable time and for shedding light on the
intricate workings of this essential scheme. Your dedication to the welfare of our ex-
servicemen is commendable and deeply appreciated.
To our listeners, thank you for your attention and for your continued support of our veterans.
The health and well-being of those who have sacrificed so much for our country is a collective
responsibility, and ECHS stands as a testament to our nation's commitment to this cause.”

consciously made an effort to use simpler language and replace the more complex words
which came to my head with toned-down alternatives. And the reviews of TDM and
Cantonment Chronicles validated the move.
Secondly, don’t be in a hurry to reach out to publishers. Refine your writing as much as you
can so that there are less chances of rejection. And wait patiently forsome traditional
publishing house to pick up your labour of love. It is quick and convenient to self-publish but
the thrill of knowing that someone out there believes in your story as much as you do and is
willing to back it, is indeed worth the wait. I waited almost three years before Readomania
accepted TDM and it has been the biggest game-changer for me. Lastly, think with your head
but write with your heart. And if I can be of any assistance, the pleasure would be mine.

your views on this topic?
What is most important is to constantly evolve and change as per the requirements of the
environment. For veterans, administrative processes can be better streamlined, technological
innovation can be better utilised and community integration made easier.
I recently perused the list of retirement courses offered by DGR and found these to be very
wide in variety and many of these are from premier institutes. So veterans will definitely
benefit from these.
