OGTT Flashcards

Question Answer

What is OGTT? A diagnostic test that measures the body’s ability to metabolize glucose afte

What is the standard glucose load for adults in OGTT? 75 g of anhydrous glucose dissolved in water.

What is the glucose load for children in OGTT? 1.75 g/kg body weight (maximum 75 g).

When is OGTT usually performed in pregnant women? At 24–28 weeks of gestation (or earlier if high risk for GDM).

Which patients typically need an OGTT? Those with borderline FBS or HbA1c, suspected diabetes, pregnant women

Why is OGTT important in pregnancy? To detect gestational diabetes, which can affect both mother and fetus.

Which endocrine condition (besides diabetes) often requires OGTT?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) due to insulin resistance risk.

What should the patient’s diet be before OGTT? At least 150 g of carbohydrates daily for 3 days prior to testing.

How long should the patient fast before OGTT? 8–14 hours overnight fast.

What is the first step of OGTT after fasting? Collect a fasting blood glucose sample.

What happens after the fasting sample is collected? The patient drinks the glucose solution within 5 minutes, and blood samples

What is the normal fasting plasma glucose value? <100 mg/dL (<5.6 mmol/L).

What is the impaired fasting glucose (IFG) range? 100–125 mg/dL (5.6–6.9 mmol/L).

What is the normal 2-hour plasma glucose value in OGTT? <140 mg/dL (<7.8 mmol/L).

What is impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in OGTT? 2-hour plasma glucose 140–199 mg/dL (7.8–11.0 mmol/L).

What 2-hour value confirms diabetes mellitus? ≥200 mg/dL (≥11.1 mmol/L).

≥126 mg/dL (≥7.0 mmol/L).

What fasting plasma glucose confirms diabetes (via OGTT or FBS)?

What fasting value indicates GDM? ≥92 mg/dL (≥5.1 mmol/L).

What 1-hour value indicates GDM? ≥180 mg/dL (≥10.0 mmol/L).

What 2-hour value indicates GDM? ≥153 mg/dL (≥8.5 mmol/L).

How many abnormal values are needed to diagnose GDM? At least one value meeting or exceeding the threshold.

What conditions can OGTT detect besides diabetes? Prediabetes (IFG, IGT), gestational diabetes, and insulin resistance (e.g., PC

Why is OGTT considered the “gold standard” for GDM? Because it directly measures how the body handles a glucose challenge.

Why is OGTT not commonly used for routine diabetes screening? It is time-consuming, less convenient, and requires patient compliance comp
