1 General
1.1 Scope
This document is adapted to the requirements of Pakistan Railways Lodhran – Shahdara Bagh Resignalling
Project based on the EBI Screen version 3.5.2. It covers operational stations. Local control operations are
described in the document. It does not include the description for the Interlocking functionality.
1.2 Purpose
This document serves as a manual for operation on the User Interface Client (UIC) of the EBI Screen V3.5.2
for Pakistan Railways Lodhran – Shahdara Bagh Resignalling Project.

3 System Overview
EBI Screen 2000 is a PC-base operations control system which uses the operating system Windows XP.

4.2 Monitor
Monitors (32” and 42”) are unit with integrated speakers for emitting the audible alarm signals. One monitor is
connected to operator PCs, Views and alarm list can be shown at the same time.

4.3 Keyboard
Keyboards with combined layouts are used. Text can be entered when necessary using the key board. You can
also perform operator actions. For more information you should consult the descriptions of the input screen
forms and dialogs.

The mouse is a standard computer mouse with two buttons and a scroll wheel. Using the mouse you can select
and manipulate elements displayed on the screen. By clicking on-screen buttons with the mouse you can also
issue commands.
The printer can be print out log file from EBI Screen.

Status bar is located at the bottom of the main window. The left hand side indicates on-line help description
while mouse is moving across the buttons and menus. The right hand side displays date/time, active server
and RGB buttons.
Date and time formats display as “dd.mm hh:mm” (date/month hour/minute)
The RGB buttons at the right most corner is used for monitoring the status of the display. The black dot
flashing inside the green rectangle indicates that EBI Screen is running.

Yard view button appears as Black button while event and alarm log appear as Green and Red respectively.
Default button returns the pre-set default workspace of each operator on the client area.

All the events occur in the system (indications and commands) are logged in the Event log window with
details of the event which are time stamp, station, object and description. Moreover, events log can be
filtered using desired criteria e.g. station, object type, priority and etc.

In order to filter events and alarms in the Event log, there are two checkboxes to filter either events or
alarms.

NOTE: 1. Event log window font can be changed through menu EventsSettingsSet Font. Events menu
also has an option for operator to change printing font of events text through menu EventsSettingsSet

The Alarm log window has almost the same interface as the Event window except that in Alarm window, you
can acknowledge or cancel alarms occurred within your authority area.
NOTE: Cancelling of alarms is possible only for certain type of alarms. The Cancel button is available only
for operators having required rights for the operation.
The first column of Alarm window (Time column) has colored indicator, the Red rectangle indicates that there
is an error occurred in the systems, on the other hand the Green rectangle indicates that the error occurred
is back to its normal state.
Additionally, Flashing Red/Green rectangle indicates that the error has not been acknowledged.
To acknowledge an alarm select that alarm then select Acknowledge button.
To acknowledge all alarms in Alarm log window select Acknowledge All button.
In order to filter alarm states (See Alarm States in Table 1), select the activity-acknowledgement pair by
ticking the checkboxes in the upper left corner of the Alarm list window.

Alarm ACK button when pressed shall quiet the current audible alarm sound. Button with station name,
when pressed brings out Alarm log window as shown in section 5.7. Additionally, the button indicates alarms
status within that station and can be displayed as in the following table.
Indication Description
Flashing Red button There are active alarms that are not yet acknowledged.
Steady Red button There are active alarms that are already acknowledged.
Flashing Green button There are inactive alarms that are not yet acknowledged.
Alarms menu contains facilities to access Alarm log windows as shown in section 5.7 and also to manage
alarms as shown below.
CAUTION: Do not be confuse, ‘Alarm ACK’ button in this section is not related to „Acknowledge’ and
„Acknowledge All’ button in section 5.7 and serving different purposes.

The section begins with operator access to the User Interface Client (UIC) and related actions. It also
introduces EBI Screen System Manager Tool.

To avoid the automatic start of UIC by a login, remove the check mark Automatic restart of UI in use within a
couple of seconds after the window has popped up. After that the UIC can be started by clicking the Start UI
button.
NOTE: EBI Screen OWS is configured to automatically start EBI Screen UIC application after logon to
Windows operating system. The right Windows username and password is needed for the system automatic
start. The detail about MS Windows username and password required can be found in EBI Screen
Installation Manual ref [2].
As soon as the traffic light shows green, the blue dotted line stops moving in the bottom of the window
indicates that UIC is ready.

Start a session by Logging into the system using pre-defined Operator Name and Password then click the
OK button.
Closing the dialog or clicking the Cancel button stops the session start. The user and password for EBI
Screen in Pakistan Railways Lodhran – Shahdara Bagh Resignalling Project will be provide 3 users,
Operator1-4 (password: operator1-4)
Supervisor1-4 (password: supervisor1-4)
Engineer1-4 (password: engineer1-4)
CAUTION: Password is case-sensitive, please change password after you login into UIC (see section 6.3).
After a successful login, the Operator Profile window appeared. In this window the information of available
Role and Authority Areas are shown. The Privileges list on the left displays the privileges associated to the
role. The roles are fixed; no selection is possible at this point. Operator Role is a combination of authority
areas and privileges configured to each specific Operator.
The roles, authority areas and privileges compose a unique operator profile which defines the operator rights
during EBI Screen sessions. The authority areas define areas in which the operator is allowed to operate.
Privileges define actions the operator is allowed to perform.
The OK button confirms the operator selection. The Cancel button closes the dialog without any selection.
NOTE: Without any selected role, operators are not allowed to do anything with the UIC. Therefore a valid
login is always required.
CAUTION: It is recommended that operator select only his/her specific Area of control even when the other
areas are available (like in figure 34).
Operators can also login using menu on main menu bar as shown in the following figure.

After operator profile confirmation, the window as shown in the following figure, which indicates the operator
authority areas is appeared. The Close button closes the dialog and starts the session which brings out the
default workspace specific to the logged in operator. The Relogin button opens the dialog Operator Profile
which allows the operator to select authority areas once again.

What if …
The error message „Error writing database‟ appears? The password can‟t be saved in the database. Repeat
changing password procedure.
The error message „Password length must be at least 4 characters‟ appears? The new password was too
short. Repeat changing password procedure with a longer password.
The error message „Invalid password‟ appears? The old password was not correct. Repeat changing
password procedure with the correct old password.
If the password is forgotten, a new password and the operator profile will have to be recreated, thus losing all
preference. Contact System Administrator.

States of servers are symbolized by traffic light symbol with Red, Yellow and Green lights. These lights
indicate the operative modes of the servers. The left traffic lights are for server number 1 and the right one is
for server number 2. The operative mode can also be seen in the text boxes below the lights.
In normal case, the server 1 is on-line and the server 2 is standby (or vice versa) and the appropriate traffic
lights show Green and Yellow.
NOTE: For Pakistan Railways Lodhran - Shahdara Bagh Resignalling Project, the server state shows only
one active traffic light as in the above figure since the project fashions one workstation with Client/Server
configuration.
What if …
The traffic lights of server show red? The server is in Off-line mode. Wait for a while, if the red light doesn‟t
change to green or yellow, contact the System Administrator.
The traffic lights of server show blinking red and the button under the traffic lights shows „Reconnect‟? The
server is in No contact mode. Click the button Reconnect and wait for the yellow or green light. If the red light
continues blinking, contact the System Administrator.
The traffic lights of server show green? The server is in On-line mode. No actions.
The error message Create Socket Failed pops-up? The communication between server processes can‟t be
started. Push the button Reconnect and/or contact the System Administrator.

Set the paper and printer properties and click the OK button. Clicking the Cancel button keeps the properties
intact.

NOTE: If the History Mode is enabled, using of the Favorite Commands is not possible. Section 6.8
describes the use of the Favorite Commands.

When writing the commands into the text file the following rules apply:
One command per row
To save favorite commands, select FileSave. To discard favorite commands editing, exit from the text
editor program without saving. To make favorite commands applicable, Re-log into the system
(SystemLogout & SystemLogin).
NOTE: To use favorite commands feature, the History Mode must be disable. Look at section 6.7 for more
detail on History Mode. Each operator can have only one favorite commands file.

Each F-key can be defined with or without Shift, Ctrl or Alt keys. This means that there are altogether 12*4 –
1 = 47 Hot key.
NOTE: F1 key without Shift, Ctrl or Alt is reserved for MS Windows Help.

Select the modifier, i.e. if in addition to the F-key itself (None) also a button Shift, Control or Alt is
needed to be pressed in order to activate the command, e.g. None.
In the row of the selected F-key, select the type of the command in the combo box, e.g. Menu
Command.
In the row of the selected F-key, select the command in the combo box, e.g. Events
GilawalaGilawala_Station.

NOTE: The command of the type Command Text can include also parameters.
NOTE: If the command of the type Command Text is ended with the sign #, the command is executed
automatically without need to press the Execute button in the Command line.
To copy the setting from one operator to another, click the Copy button.
To copy the F-keys settings into a file, e.g. for printing purposes, click the Save To File button.

What if …
The error message „Error reading database’ pops-up? The function key setup for operator can‟t be read in
database.
The error message „Error writing database‟ pops-up? The function key definitions can‟t be written in
database. Repeat function key setup.
The error message „Could Not Open File’ pops-up? The function key definitions can‟t be saved in to a file.
Repeat function key setup.
Selecting Yes causes the operator current session to be closed. However, EBI Screen UIC remains on but
the operation is no more possible.

To change the authority areas, click the Relogin button. The dialog window Operator Profile is displayed for
role and authority area selection. Click the closes button to close the window.

The single object command requires only one object as the command parameter, while the multiple objects
command requires two/three objects.
Regardless of the number of the parameter in the commands, commands can also be categorized by
behavior;
Normal commands
Critical commands
Normal commands can be executed right away while critical commands require command confirmation. After
an operator issued a critical command, the related object displays command confirmation required indication
(normally as a Flashing Yellow rectangle frame surrounded the object or Flashing text as for Crank Handle
symbol and text of counter digit symbol)

When using a mouse, the operator can enter a single object commands by right clicking at the object then
the available commands will appear in a form of pop up menu as in the following figure.
To enter a multiple object commands, the operator first left click at the first object then second object (if any)
then right click at the last object, after that the pop up command menu shall appear.
After the operator select a command by right clicking, the command with its parameters will appear in the
command bar and the Execute button will be clickable.

When using a keyboard, the operator can enter a command with parameters directly to the command bar
then the Execute button will be clickable.
The operator then proceeds by clicking Execute button to send the command string to the Interlocking.
And if the command‟s syntax was correct, message ‘Command sent OK’ is displayed in the command
response field to indicate that the command was successfully sent to the Interlocking.
On the other hand, if the command string is not correct, an error message will be displayed in the command
response field and the command bar‟s icon will indicate a warning sign.
What if …
Text in the response field shows „Unknown Command?‟ The command doesn‟t exist. Retype the command.
Text in the response field shows „Unknown Object!!‟? The object (the parameters) doesn‟t exist. Retype the
object.
Text in the response field shows „Too few Arguments‟? Not enough parameters in the command string.
Enter the right amount of command parameters.
Text in the response field shows „Command Not Allowed!!‟? Not enough privileges to issue the command, or
no authority. Change you role and/or authority areas.
Text in the response field shows „Unknown Route!!‟? Wrong parameters for the route command. Enter the
right parameters.
The response from the Interlocking device will be displayed in the command bar‟s response field. The
response log shows 8 latest command responses. Response text of a successfully executed command is
displayed in Green. Red coloured text indicates error in command execution.
You can cancel the command procedure by clicking the Clear button in the Command bar or the ESC key on
the keyboard any time before pushing the Execute button.
NOTE: From the figure 75, 78 and 79 the color of each frame surrounded each object has the meaning as
below.
1.Flashing Yellow Frame (In Figure 75) means this is a critical command and required operator to do
confirmation by right clicks at such object and then selects Confirm.
2.Green Frame (In Figure 78) means this is the single object command which only need to right click to one
object and select command from pop-up menu.
3.Grey Frame (In Figure 79) means this is one of multiple object which is selected to execute the command.
The first and second (if any) object require left-click selection and the last object require right-click to display
multiple object command such as Route Setting.

At this state, the Day/Night button, illustrated in table 3d (Day/Night button displayed in Green with Flashing
Text), indicated Night mode, however, the Point Indicator is still being put to off as Point Indicator button

A digital clock is provided under the Authority area button; the time is derived from the Windows clock.

EBI Screen system categorizes the alarm with priority level (1-4), which will be described as following
