Task 3 — Role-play: Returning a Defective Item


Student A: Customer — You bought a pair of shoes yesterday; the sole is coming off. You want a refund or exchange.
Student B: Shop assistant — Check receipt and policy; offer solutions (exchange, repair, store credit).
Use phrases: refund, exchange, defective, warranty, receipt, policy.

Task 4 — IELTS-style Speaking


Part 1: Short Q&A; (answer in 2–3 sentences each).
• How often do you go shopping?
• Do you prefer shopping alone or with friends? Why?
• Have your shopping habits changed in recent years?
Part 2: Cue Card — Describe a time you bought something important.
You should say: what it was; where you bought it; why it was important; and how you felt.

Part 3: Discussion
• How has online shopping affected local businesses?
• Do advertisements influence what people buy? In what ways?
• Should schools teach financial literacy and smart shopping? Why/Why not?

Pronunciation Focus
Word stress: warranty, authentic, discount, delivery, barcode, installment. Mark the stressed syllable.
Sentence stress in suggestions: “How about we buy it online?”
Reflection
What new phrases did you use today? Which task was most challenging and why?

Homework
Write 120–150 words about a memorable purchase. Use at least 8 vocabulary items from this unit.
