Part 5
For questions 41-45, read the article and answer the questions below. Mark A, B, C or D.
Travel More, Pay Less
As you all know, I’m a big-time traveler and blogger. Around six hundred people visit my travel blog every day, and many
of my readers ask me for advice about traveling. What kinds of advice do they need? Well, I get all kinds of questions, but
most of them are about how to save money on different parts of the trip—from flights to museum tickets. So I’ve decided to
answer some of the most frequent questions today. Enjoy!
1. How can I find cheap flights?
Never travel during the peak season. It’s just too expensive. Travel during the off-season instead. The off-season depends on
the country, but it’s generally from late fall to early spring. At this time, flights are much cheaper. Oh, and book your flights
three months in advance. Then you can get cheaper rates. Last November, I went to Spain. I booked the trip in August and
saved 40 percent on everything! Also, if money matters more to you than time, book a layover flight. That’s cheaper.
2. Can I save money when exchanging currency?
Of course! Just remember to do it before you leave. You can get a good exchange rate at your bank. Avoid airport exchange
booths. They will rip you off. Last time, I wanted to know just how terrible their deals are, so I exchanged $100 at a local
airport. I ended up paying a $10 service fee for exchanging less than $500 and learning that the rate was 15 percent worse
than the official bank rate!
3. How do you minimize your accommodation costs?
That’s a broad question. Of course, hostels are cheaper than hotels. But there are many other ways to save money on places
to stay. For example, staying in the heart of downtown might seem really convenient, but oftentimes it’s cheaper to stay
a few miles away and use public transportation to get to the city. Also, some hotels provide complimentary services, such
as breakfast, parking, shuttle service, and Wi-Fi, so check for these options because they can greatly lower your overall
spending.
41 What is the writer trying to do in this text?
A advise frequent travelers to read his blog before leaving
B suggest different ways to travel on a low budget
C explain why it is important to save money on travel
D describe an incident that happened to him while traveling
42 The writer saved money on a plane ticket to Spain by
A traveling during the spring season
B booking a flight a few months earlier
C buying tickets at the last minute
D choosing to take a layover flight

A Their exchange rate was higher than that of local banks.
B They charged him a service fee of $100.
C Their service was poor compared to other exchanges.
D They only accept exchanges of more than $500.
44 What does the writer say about hotels?
A They are almost always more expensive than hostels.
B They are generally more convenient to stay at than hostels.
C The ones far from downtown have no access to public transportation.
D Some of them offer various kinds of services free of charge.
45 What might the writer write to a friend about saving money on traveling?
A I don’t really mind traveling during the peak season although it costs more.
B It’s wise to exchange money in advance before you leave, so you get a good rate.

Two Great Weavers
Part 1
Arachne was a beautiful young woman from the ancient kingdom of Lydia. She was so attractive that some people
even said she was a princess. She was also famous throughout the land for her remarkable skills as a weaver.
Whenever she was weaving, young women and forest nymphs would come to watch her. They quickly spread the
word of her incredible talent, but no one would believe that she could have learned to weave so skillfully by
herself. Rumors spread that Athena must have taught her.
Part 2
Arachne listened carefully to their praise and became extremely proud of her talent. She got angry whenever
anyone said that she must have learned from Athena. Arachne said that she had done it all on her own. Furthermore,
she told everyone that she was a much better weaver than Athena.
“Athena would never be able to weave as well as I do,” she said, full of confidence.
One day, Athena finally heard about Arachne’s arrogant claims. At first the goddess was extremely angry, but then
she decided to talk to Arachne and give the young woman a chance to explain. Athena came up with a clever plan.
To hide who she was, Athena dressed up as an old woman and went to Arachne’s house. After arriving, Athena told
Arachne that the gods would be very upset if she did not stop boasting right away. However, after hearing this
advice, Arachne did not apologize or ask for forgiveness. Instead, she simply stopped weaving, laughed, and loudly
challenged Athena to a weaving contest.
“Let Athena come here and prove that she is the best weaver in the world,” Arachne said. “If she beats me, then I
will accept whatever punishment she decides to give me!”
Athena was furious to hear this.
Part 3
Suddenly, Athena removed her disguise and revealed herself. Everyone jumped back in shock and fear, but Arachne
remained calm. Athena quickly accepted Arachne’s challenge, and a date was set for a competition between the two
great weavers.
People came from far and wide to watch the contest. Arachne and Athena sat silently at their looms, looking at the
audience. They began weaving thousands of colorful threads into enormous, detailed tapestries. Everyone watched
in amazement as the two artists battled each other for hours. Finally, Arachne and Athena finished their pieces of
work.
First, everyone turned their attention to Athena’s tapestry. It told the magnificent history of the gods. In one part, it
showed Athena’s victory over Poseidon, the god of the sea. It even included stories of humans who had been
punished badly for trying to challenge the gods. Then, all eyes were on Arachne’s tapestry.
It was very different from Athena’s work of art. It showed the mistakes and weaknesses of the gods. For example,
it told stories of how Zeus had used his power to trick goddesses.
BONUS Part. Write a short memory (around 100 words) about one of the following topics.
A. Something that happened during a holiday, B. A time you stayed with other people, C. A place
you visited.
