Onomatopoeia

• The formation of word from a sound associated with what is named.

• Examples:

1. Animals Sounds: Moo (Cow), Woof (Dog), Meow (Cat), Quack (Duck),
Oink (Pig), Ribbit / Croak (Frog), Chirp (Bird), Roar (Lion).

2. Nature Sounds: Splash (Water), Rustle (Leaves), Whoosh (Wind), Drip


(Water), Buzz (Bees / Wind), Crackle (Wood burning).

3. Man-made & Object Sounds: Bang (Gunshot or Explosion), Tick-Tock


(Clock), Clang (Metal hitting metal), Fizz (Carbonated Drinks), Honk (Car
Horn), Beep (Electronic Signal).

4. Human Sounds: Sigh (A Long Breath), Giggle (Light Laughter), Groan (A


deep sound of pain / displeasure), Hiss (A Snake or Other Sound), Chuckle (A
Soft Laugh)
