Master 200/OOW500 Oral Exam Report: 1045-1225.

Here is my recollection of some exam questions (Alex M)

The examiner explained the Code of conduct.

He said that once the exam has started it will be recording.

The examiner told his name was Mizan, then he asked for my ID, asked where I live and if I was in my
house. He asked to show around the room.

The exam has started to be recorded!

The examiner read the syllabus and said that he would ask few questions from each part of the
syllabus.

1)What was my last boat: type, size etc.

How long have I been a seafarer for and what roles?

2)What certificates does a small commercial vessel require?

3)What is the name of the surveyor company you use to inspect your vesssel and what certificates
and documents do you have on board of your actual vessel.

4)You are a master arriving on a new yacht. What do you look at first on arrival?

5)Passage from Portsmouth to the River Thames. Full APEM explanation, mostly the planning stage.

How to fix your positions and what do you include in the planning stage on your chart, waypoints,
saferoute, no go area ect. ?

6)MARPOL annex 5 and special areas. Is it the English Channel a special area?

Garbage plan and how do you deal with it when you arrive to the Port.
7)The examiner showed me a picture of the LOADLINE marks (Plimsoll lines and density symbols),
(2,0,8M,6,4) and the meaning of the circle with R and L, then TF and F, then T,S,W,WNA marks. He
asked me to explain the meaning of the circle with L and R.

8)Tidal diamond: how and where to find direction and speed of the tide.

Secondary ports difference and interpolation.

9)The examiner showed me a compass rose on a chart and asked how many degrees were there in
total, how to use it and how many points were there to the starboard bow above of the beam. He
asked me how each quarter of the compass rose was called.

10) Explain a synoptic weather chart and a surface weather chart and find the wind direction and
isobars wind strength and to explain cyclonic and anticyclone directions.

11)What sources of weather forecast do you know?

12)COLLREGS: Towing vessel is pushing at night . By COLREGs is it pushing or towing, he wanted the
exact definition of a towing vessel engaged in pushing and not towing .

Showed few impeding scenarios and wanted me to explain rules 18,9,10.

13)Cardinal mark questions with video scenarios.

14)He asked me about magnetic compass, he showed a pinnacle and a very old wooden compass, I
was asked what was inside.

15) The examiner created a scenarios of a steering gear failure and actions including a security
broadcast (moving away from danger , rise alarm , Munster crew , emergency crew list , using
emergency steering system or another station or wing or flying bridge , emergency engine stop ,
drop an anchor, I checked my position and UKC and I changed my AIS status to NUC and night NUC
light signal, and he asked me to explain the difference between follow up and non follow up mode).

Then the Examiner suddenly said that during the passage to the River Thames I had a Collision with a
fishing vessel and one fisherman fall in the water and other 2 fishermen on fish boat, their boat is
not working, only my boat is functioning. I explain the emergency action plan including Mayday and
MOB procedure. Then the examiner said that I could not find the MOB casualty and I explained that I
would use the square search box. He asked me where to find this box and I said IAMSAR VOL 3
manual.
17)The examiner asked me to send a mayday in order and explain the difference between
designated and undesignated mayday DSC. Which channel to use for a DSC and which one for a
mayday call.

18)The examiner asked me how to carry on a crane operation, lifting fuel bunker into my vessel,
certification, logbooks,COSWP etc.

The examiner asked about Stability and how G and M interact, how G moves during the operation
and what happens if I have got a slack tank and how I would solve the problem.

What is the difference between Stiff and Tender vessel.

What is the difference between the angle of LOLL and LIST.

19)Actions in fogs and when hearing a fog ahead, explain the whole procedure and actions.

20)COLREGs Buoyage ; emergency wreck, special mark, danger mark , safe water , cardinals ,
preferred channels region B and A.

21)Lots of Chart symbols including the Wk with line underneath which is taken by diver or robots.

The nominal range of a light house and what is the meaning of good visibility in NM.

22)The whole procedure when the OOW takes over a night watch with his team and I the Master go
to sleep.( logbooks, full assessment, night vision, checklist, water integrity,traffic, APEM etc).

23)The examiner showed me a fishing vessel with outlying gear ,I said that it was underway and not
making way or stopped.

24)Showed me a fishing trawler without nav lights and I said underway and not making way or
stopped.

25)The examiner asked what was the radius of 3 vertical white night lights of a towing vessel 360 or
225?

The exam lasted 1h40 minutes. The examiner complimented me and congratulated on having passed
the exam.
