Google Map Migration Project – Due: July 17th, (Thursday)

1. Research your assigned diaspora group’s migration routes, causes of


movement, and cultural footprint
2. Use Google My Maps to create a visual map
o Add pins and lines
o Label origin and destination countries
o Explain push/pull factors
o Show cultural connections
o Add examples of the diaspora’s footprint in the communities they
settled

3. Include quotes or testimonies from migrants (e.g., from news

Here's how to effectively use Google My Maps for this project


Accessing Google My Maps:
 Go to Google Drive and select "New" then "More" and choose Google My
Maps.
 Alternatively, go directly to Google My Maps and create a new map.

Creating the Map:


 Choose a Base Map:
Select a base map style that suits the migration you're visualizing, like satellite,
terrain, or political maps.
 Add Places (Markers):
Click the "Add marker" tool and place pins on the map for specific locations
(e.g., origin points, destinations, significant locations along the route).
 Add Lines (Routes):
Use the "Add line or shape" tool to draw lines connecting the markers,
visualizing the migration path. You can also use the "Measure distance" tool to
calculate the distance between points.
 Add Details:
Click on the markers or lines to add descriptions, images, videos, or links to
relevant information.

 Collaboration:
Share the map with classmates or colleagues to collaborate on adding
information and insights.

 Share the workload for this project
 Discuss in groups the different types of research needed
 Make a schedule and assign group members tasks to complete by certain
dates
 Possible division of labor
o Researchers and Map makers
o Sometimes, members may do both roles.
