Multiple angles:
The integral multiples of an angle A are called multiple angles of A.
For any angle - 2 ,3 ,4 …..are multiple angles of .
Trigonometric ratios of multiple angles:
I .Trigonometric ratios of 2:
Standard formulae:
1) sin 2 = 2 sin cos
2tan
sin 2 =
1+tan2
2) cos 2 = cos2 sin2
cos 2 = 1 2 sin2
cos 2 = 2 cos2 1
1 tan2
cos 2 =
1+ tan2
Page 6 Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education 25 August 2020
From the above we can deduce
1cos 2 = 2 sin2
1 + cos 2 = 2 cos2
2 tan
3) tan 2 =
1 tan2
Solved Examples:
1. If sin A=0.4 then find cos 2A
Solution :Given sin A = 0.4
since cos 2A = 1 - 2 sin2A
= 1-2(0.4)2
= 1- 2(0.16)
= 1- 0.32
= 0.68

2. If cos A= then find cos 2A
2
Solution:
since cos 2A = 2 cos2A -1
1 2
= 2 -1

3. If sec = - and lies in second quadrant, then find tan2.
5
Solution:
since tan2 = sec2 -1

Solved Examples:
1) If sin A = 0.4, Find sin 3A.
Solution :Given sin A = 0.4
Now, sin 3A = 3 sin A 4 sin3A
= 3(0.4) 4(0.4)3
= 1.2 0.256
= 0.944
sin 3A = 0.944

3) Prove that : = tan2
1+ cos2+ cos4
sin4 + sin2
Solution: L.H.S. =
1+ cos2+ cos4
Use Formula sin4= 2 sin2 cos2
And 1 + cos4 = 2 cos22
2 sin2 cos2 + sin2
L.H.S. =
2 cos22 + cos2
