50 kN. Determine the normal and shearing stresses acting on a plane inclined at
30 ° to the line of action of the axial loads. The bar is so short that the possibility
of buckling as a column may be neglected. (Ans. σ = -20 MPa, τ = -34.6 MPa)
2. Rework Problem 1 by use of Mohr's circle. (Ans. See Fig. 1 below σ = -20
MPa, τ = 34.6 MPa)

4. For the element of Problem 3, determine analytically the principal stresses and
their directions as well as the maximum shearing stresses and the directions of
the planes on which they occur. (σmax =41.6 MPa at 54 °13' σ min = - 21.6 MPa at
144 °13' τ max =31.61 MPa at 9° 13')
5. Rework Problem 4 by the use of Mohr's circle. (Ans. See Fig. 2 above)

7. What form does Mohr's circle assume for the loading described in Problem 6?
Ans. (A point on the horizontal axis located a distance of 50 MPa (to scale) from
the origin)
8. Draw Mohr's circle for a plane element subject to the σx = 50 MPa and σy = 50
MPa. From Mohr's circle determine the stresses acting on a plane inclined at 20°

axis? [Ans: 26.16 ×10- 3, 8.84 ×10 - 3.]
10. Calculate the linear strains at θ = ±45 ° for the rectangular strain components
εx = - 0.05, εy = + 0.05 and γxy = - 0.05. [Ans: -0.025, +0.025.]
11. With reference to the axes Oxy, the rectangular strain components are εx =
0.002 εy = 0.004 and τxy= 0.004. Transform these with reference to another set of
axes Ox'y' that is at 30° (clockwise) with respect to Oxy. [Ans: εx' = 4.23 ×10-3, εy'
= 3.27 × 10- 3, γx'y' = 3.73 × 10-3.]

analytically the normal and shearing stresses on a plane inclined at an angle of
20° to the x-axis. (Anz. σ = 73.6MPa τ = - 22.3MPa)
