Alchemy

By Sarah Jo Burch
As the goal of alchemy is to produce
from one of many possible ingredients a
single product, that is, gold, this skirt is
designed to be fabulous on any figure, knit
with any compatible yarn. The pattern
itself is simple, with all shaping completed
in the first 7 inches, and the beauty of the
design lies in the colors that you choose.
760 (990, 1290, 1680, 2185) yards of S
Charles Luna Collezione (or Rowan Kid-
silk Haze or other comparable lace-weight
mohair) {I used colors #22, 13, 15 and
14}
780 (1015, 1320, 1720, 2235) yards of
Madeleinetosh Tosh DK (or comparable
smooth DK weight yarn) {I used color
Flour Sack}
32” US size 6 circular needles
32” (or length needed) US size 7 circular
needles
6 stitch markers - five alike, and one different for beginning of round

Sizes: S-26” waist (M-30” waist, L-34” waist, XL- 38” waist, 2X-42” waist) All sizes
21” long

Gauge: 21 stitches in 4 inches with Tosh DK on US 6s (This is the gauge for the
waistband - if you’ve got that, just go up a needle size for the main skirt)

Note on striping: The stripe sequence I used was 4” of #22 Luna, 1” of #13, 1” of
22, 4” of 13, 1” of 15, 1” of 13, 4” of 15, 1” of 14, 1” of 15 and 4” of 14 (the last
2” are garter stitch for the hem)

Cast on 132 (156, 180, 204, 228) stitches on 6s with Tosh DK. Work 1 inch flat in
stockinette (ending after a knit row), join for working in the round, purl one round,
knit 7 rounds, then knit each stitch together with the corresponding cast on stitch to
create elastic casing, placing a marker after 11 (13, 15, 17, 19) stitches, then every 22
(26, 30, 34, 38) stitches around.
Change to 7s and begin working with one strand of Tosh DK and one strand of Luna
held together.
Waist shaping:
[*Knit to marker, knit into the stitch below, slip marker, knit into the stitch below* re-
peat to end of round. Work 5 rounds plain] Repeat these six rows a total of seven
times.
Continue in stockinette until skirt is 2”
short of desired length, then begin working
flat, knitting every row and slipping the
first stitch of each row purlwise. Cast off
loosely.

Insert 1” elastic into casing and seam

closed.

Before weaving in your ends, decide if you

prefer the look of the stockinette or reverse
stockinette side of the fabric - I found both
to be appealing.
