Based on Maxima, minima and saddle points& Method of Lagrange multipliers

1. Find the maximum and minimum values of 𝑥 + 3𝑥𝑦 − 3𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 4.

[Ans: Max=4 at (0, 0), Min=0 at (2, 0), saddle points are (1, 1) & (1, -1)]
2. Find all stationary values of𝑥 + 3𝑥𝑦 − 15𝑥 − 15𝑦 + 72𝑥.
[Ans: Min=108 at (6, 0), Max=108 at (4, 0) and saddle points are (5, 1) & (5, -1)]

3. Show that the minimum value of 𝑢 = 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑎 + is 3𝑎 .

4. A rectangular box with open top has volume V. Find the dimensions of the box requiring
least material. [Ans: x=y=2z ]
5. Find the maximum volume of the parallelepiped inscribed in the ellipsoid
x2 y2 z2 8abc  a b c 
   1. [Answer: Max volume is at  , , ]

7. Find the maximum and minimum values of the function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 on the circle
𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1 using the method of Lagrange’s Multiplier.
[Ans: Min= -5 and Max=5]
8. If 𝑢 = 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑥𝑦 with the condition ∅ = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 − 𝑎𝑏 = 0, prove that the
stationary values of u are given by 4(𝑢 − 𝑎) (𝑢 − 𝑏) = 𝑎𝑏.
9. Find the maximum and minimum distances of the point (3, 4, 12) from the sphere
𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 1. [Ans: Min=12 and Max=14]
10. Using Lagrange Multipliers Method, find the minimum value of 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 subject to
the condition 𝑥𝑦𝑧 = 𝑎 . [Ans: Minimum Value= 3𝑎 ]
