The Rev. George Anne McDonnell, Rector
Welcome to St. Mark’s
If you are new to the Episcopal Church, sit back and relax. Let the
congregation carry you this Sunday as our guest. The customs and
traditions we use will become familiar with time and practice.
Everyone is welcome here as a child of God. You bless us simply by your
presence among us. You are invited to join us for coffee and
conversation in the Community Center following the service.
Pentecost
Today is the last day of the Easter season called Pentecost. This is the
pinnacle day of our Easter season as we receive the Holy Spirit. We are
resurrected as Christ’s body in the world. This is the birth of our
movement as followers of Christ. Pentecost is often depicted with
fire. Fire reminds us of the uncontrollability of God the divine. The
color used to depict Holy Spirit is red.
Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you find a welcome in our
church.
Everything you need for worship can be found in this bulletin and
comes from the Book of Common Prayer and Anglican/Episcopal
tradition.
Everyone is welcome at our table to receive communion.
All people and all ages are welcomed and encouraged to receive Holy
Communion. It is our custom to place the palm of one hand in the other
to receive the bread. You may receive the wine either by guiding the
chalice to your mouth, or by dipping the bread into the wine. If you do
not wish to receive, but would like to have a blessing, please cross your
arms in front of your chest. Grape juice is available to the right of the
altar rail, and the bread is gluten free.
All children are welcome at St. Mark’s services. A soft play area in the
back of the church offers a comfortable place for little ones to move
around. Nursery care is available Sunday mornings from 9:30 AM to
12:00 PM for children one year through four years old.
Our Sunday School class meets during the 10:00 AM service. After class,
students and teachers process into the sanctuary to join us and share in
Holy Communion. The class is located in the patio area near the parish
hall.
Please also note that this bulletin is a lavish gift from the church and
our trees. Please hand it back to the ushers so that we can recycle it.

Collect for Purity
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and
worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Collect of the Day
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by
sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same
Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in
his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and
ever.
Amen.
Liturgy of the Word
Please be seated and listen to readings from the Bible.
A reading from Genesis (11:1-9)
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as
they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of
Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, "Come, let us
make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone,
and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a
city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for
ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the
whole earth." The LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which
mortals had built. And the lord said, "Look, they are one people, and
they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they
will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they
will not understand one another's speech." So the LORD scattered them
abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off
building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the LORD
confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD
scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
At the end of the reading,
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
Thanks be to God.

The Response: Psalm 104
Benedic, anima mea
25 O LORD, how manifold are your works! *
in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your
creatures.
26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to
number, *
creatures both small and great.
27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, *
which you have made for the sport of it.
28 All of them look to you *
to give them their food in due season.
29 You give it to them; they gather it; *
you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.
30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; *
you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.
31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *
and so you renew the face of the earth.
32 May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; *
may the LORD rejoice in all his works.
33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; *
he touches the mountains and they smoke.
34 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; *
I will praise my God while I have my being.
35 May these words of mine please him; *
I will rejoice in the LORD.
37 Bless the LORD, O my soul. *
Hallelujah!

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-21)
When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in
one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush
of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested
on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began
to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in
Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered,
because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.
Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking
Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native
language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia,
Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt
and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we
hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and
perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others
sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed
them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to
you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you
suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was
spoken through the prophet Joel:
`In the last days it will be, God declares
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
in those days I will pour out my Spirit;
and they shall prophesy.
And I will show portents in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
The sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day.
Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."
At the end of the reading,

The Holy Gospel
At the beginning of the Gospel, we proclaim it by saying the following words:
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, Lord Christ.
A reading from the Gospel according to John
John 14:8-17 (25-27)
Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be
satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip,
and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the
Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that
I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I
do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his
works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if
you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very
truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I
do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to
the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father
may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I
will do it.
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the
Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.
This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it
neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with
you, and he will be in you."
At the end of the Gospel, we say the following words:
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Christ.
Sermon
A period of silence follows the Sermon.

The Renewal of Baptismal Vows
Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment
to Jesus Christ?
I do.
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the
breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin,
repent and return to the Lord?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in
Christ?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as
yourself?
I will, with God’s help.
11
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the
dignity of every human being?
I will, with God’s help.
The Presider concludes the Renewal of Vows as follows
May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given
us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the
forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Amen.
Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ
your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to
come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and forever.
Amen.
Thanksgiving over the Water
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water…
The Presider tells of our history with water and blesses it.
...To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and
glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Thanksgivings and Blessings
The people of St. Mark’s are invited at this time to request blessings for
areas of need in their lives or to offer up thanksgivings for anything that
might be on their hearts or minds; birthdays, anniversaries, any occasions of
joy. At the close of our thanksgivings, we say the following prayer:
Watch over us, O Lord, as our days increase; bless and guide us
wherever we may be. Strengthen us when we stand; comfort us
when discouraged or sorrowful; raise us up if we fall; and in our
hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the
days of our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Our children and youth join us for communion.
The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
All: And also with you.
The Peace is exchanged as an action showing that we are at peace with all
people – as all people are the face of Christ. Please greet all those around you
(stranger and friends) with a handshake (or hug) saying “Peace”, “Peace be
with you.”, “God’s Peace”, or “Peace of the Lord”.
The Offering
Anthem: Send Forth Thy Spirit” by Fr. Jos. Schuetky Op.8
arr. Wayne Howorth
Send Forth Thy Spirit, O Lord, that we may praise Thee.
Send Forth Thy Spirit, O Lord, that we may praise Thee;
And give new Life to earth with Thy blessing. Alleluia, Alleluia.
Come, Thou, come, Thou,
Holy Spirit, refresh our hearts with faith in Thy Love divine;
And bless with Thy Love, and Thy mercy,
O Lord, and peace everlasting, peace everlasting.
Send Forth Thy Spirit, O Lord, that we may praise Thee.
Send Forth Thy Spirit, O Lord, that we may praise Thee;
And give new Life to earth with Thy blessing.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

The Doxology

The Liturgy of the Table
Our Eucharistic Prayer comes from Enriching our Worship I, a supplement to
the 1979 prayer book.
The Presider continues:
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give
thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, Almighty
and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his
true promise, the Holy Spirit came down on this day from heaven,
lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all
truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith,
and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood,
and to preach the Gospel to all nations.
Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of
every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing,
15
Holy, holy, holy Lord (1982:S125) English Folk Mass
The Presider continues,
Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life.
You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite
love.
You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful
stewards
and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image
in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the
world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another,
and rejected your love.
Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation
for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant
with you.
You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and
raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the
fullness of time,
you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the
16
human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving
himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the
way of freedom and life.
On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread,
and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his
friends, and said:
“Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.”
As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had
given thanks, he gave it to them, and said:
“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is
poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you
drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from
your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be
for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who
share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s
Body in the world.
Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that
with Blessed Mary, Mark, and all your saints, past, present, and yet to
come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with
Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor,
glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
17
forever and ever. Amen.

Icon for Pentecost
This icon of Pentecost shows us the Light of the Holy Spirit and the Ora
(light) of the first reconciliation of the 11 Apostles and others who were
there.
And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them,
"Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are
forgiven;
if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." John 20:22-23
The Icon shows the Blessed Mother in the center with the eleven
Apostles. The women in front of her and the apostles are kneeling to
show their faith in the Lord. The blue and orange circle at the top of the
Icon represents God the Father and his divinity. The dove, which is a
well-known symbol of the Holy Spirit is clearly visible over everyone
24
and is also visible in each of the tongues of fire over each person’s
head. This Icon represents the strength and fire of the Holy Spirit and
the birth of the church.
