General Objectives;
The students are conceptualized the various aspects of Data Communication and
Computer Networks like Network service and architecture, Transport architecture,
Routing, Link Layers and LAN and Network management and Security.
Specific Objectives;
Specific objectives of this unit are;
to make the students understand OSI and TCP/IP computer networks models
to develop foundations of data communications and computer networks.
to make the students understand the application layer services and apply them
to make them understand network layer protocol and services, IP addressing, routing
and switching
to make the students clearly understand the network transport architectures, TCP, UDP,
TCP congestion control
to develop concept and theoretical backgrounds for IEEE standard 802 for LANs and
WLANs,
to make them understand fundamentals of data communications through guided media
and wireless
to make the students understand network security and management concepts.
Course Contents:
Unit 1: Introduction. 6 Hrs
Communication in a network‐centric world, Use of Computer Network, The architecture
of the Internet, LANs, WANs and internetworks, Network standardization, Trend in
networking.
Unit 2: Application Layer Functionality and Protocols. 8 Hrs
Principles of application layer protocols, Application layer protocols and services
examples, (DNS, mail, file transfer, WWW), Socket programming ( with TCP and
UDP).
Unit 3: Transport Layer. 8 Hrs
Roles of the transport layer, Transport layer protocol and services, UDP: communicating
with low overhead, TCP: communicating with reliability, Performance issues and
congestion control.
Unit 4: Network Layer. 10 Hrs
Network service model, Routing principles and algorithms, Internet Protocol (IP),
Addressing the network, Routing in the Interne, IPv6, Multicast routing.
Unit 5: Data Link Layer. 10 Hrs
Data link layer: accessing the media, Error detection and correction, Multiple access
protocols, LAN address and ARP, Ethernet, Wireless LAN and broadband wireless.
Unit 6: Physical layer. 12 Hrs
Theoretical basis of data communication, Guided transmission media, Wireless
transmission, Communication satellite, Mobile communication.
Unit 7: Network Management and Security. 6 Hrs
Network management; Network management infrastructure, Network Security,
Cryptography, Communication security, Authentication protocols, Web and email
security.
