Master Plan

I would like to continue my studies at Jazzcampus because I think that in the music field it’s necessary to go
always forward and deep in the learning process. Considering the hugeness of the task is necessary to
fragment it and choose one topic at a time. For Example: if I want to study blues-affected jazz piano from
50s/60s maybe I should focus on a specific pianist (not the most obvious ones) like Junior Mance. In my
specific case for the things I want to study (more oriented to modern jazz) I think that a school like this
could be the right choice. Also for what are my artistic goals (which I’ll explain below in the master project)

The theme of my Master Plan is: Interaction between musical elements from the Mediterranean area and
Jazz language, and how they blend harmonically.

I think I can manage to find a personal artistic vision which can incorporate Mediterranean musical
elements (also Italian’s ones, my birth country) and the jazz language. To do this I need a more flexible
learning path rather than a more scholastic one (more common in Italy)

My principal Goals are:

- Artistic Development: I want achieve a more personal sound, not so strictly tied to be bop/ post-
bop language but more open to other influences (like middle eastern ones)
- Research: Write a dissertation on the common elements and personal characteristics of some
important artists in their compositional and improvisational approach (Shai Maestro, Nitai
Hershkovits, Avishai Cohen), with a focus on writing my personal music merging my style with new
inputs derived from the researching process.
- Professional Integration: Create a fresh and recognizable artistic product which can find his place in
the jazz music scene

The topic of my research is:

The music of Avishai Cohen, Shai Maestro, Nitai Hershkovits, a dissertation.

Describing common elements & influences and differences between these three artists in their
compositional and improvisational approach.

My career prospects are:

- I want to be a jazz pianist with a solid artistic vision, which can be recognizable in the jazz scene,
with a fresh approach in music composition and improvisation.
- I would like to integrate this with a career as a sideman for jazz groups (both concerts and
recordings) and teacher. For this other objects I need to gain experience in music recording
sessions and pedagogical activities.

I think these are some of the most important aspects for a performing musician to develop his craft aside
from his personal artistic research. Working as a sideman can be useful to create a network of contacts and
relations with other musicians (which can be useful also for a personal artistic research).

To achieve my research purposes I want to project a specific learning schedule that has to incorporate
those artists’ compositions’ analysis, transcriptions to study their language and compositional exercises tied
to those artist’s languages and characteristics to deeply absorb new compositional devices. Also doing a set
of interviews with those artists (when possible) to have more deep insights of their artistic approach. In this
way I want to merge a more analytical approach to the subject with a more conversational one (with the
interviews)

Also I think that this topic of research could be a very versatile and fertile, focusing on a style of music quite
young compared to other jazz “subgenres”, which can lead other aspiring artists to expand their own
artistic view. Also this could lead to a more inclusive approach to music, bringing together different cultures
and people.
