Inspection Report about Diesel Tank of Nepta Petroleum Company
General information:

Project: Nepta Petroleum Company

Client: Nepta Depot Company
Location: Aljaili – North of Sudan Gerri free zoon
Inspected by: Inspection Eng. Hamid Albashir (NDT level II)
Inspector: Abd ElMajidJumaa (NDT level II)
Date of inspection: August, 2025

 Introduction:
As requested from nepta petroleum Company that were located at Aljaili-
Khartoum north- Sudan, in order to inspect the Diesel tank (T-06) that was
exposed to firing which leads to deteriorating at shell courses, bottom plates
and others parts of the Tank.
 Tank data sheet record:

Tank Capacity 1459m³

Height 1064m
Diameter 13.365m

1. Inspection scope of work an aboveground storage tank(AST):

 The scope of work typically includes a thorough examination of the tank’s

shell, bottom, roof, internal components, and foundation, along with an
assessment of the tank’s painting, containment, and associated piping,
Inspections are conducted both internally and externally, often involving
visual checking for any sign of corrosion, leaks, bulges and other defect,
addition to hardness check, non-destructive testing (NDT) methods like
ultrasonic thickness measurement, and potentially even confined space
entry for detailed evaluations.

2. Details of inspection Scope:

2.1Visual inspection conducted at all entire shell tank, externally and

internally.
2.2 Ultrasonic thickness measurement.
2.3 Hardness Testing.
2.4 Bottom tank assessment.
2.5 Roof tank assessment.

3. External inspection:
 Slightly minor corrosion could be seen at different areas.
 Deformation such as inward bulges found at the 1st up to the 7thcourse from
south to east side direction of the tank which were all affected by heating.
(See attached photo)
 Ladder/ platform, secure with well supported cages on the ladders. But
painting peel off and exposing based metal.(See attached photo)
 There are two cooling pipes 4 inches found deformation such as bending at
vertical side.
 Out let tank pipe 6 inches found damage and bending.
 Deformation at drain pipe 4inch with valve.
 Instrument cable damage.
 Inlet pipe 4 inch with gate and check valve exposed to extreme firing.
 Main inlet pipe with flange found damage.
 Drain bond broken.
 Sample bypass line ¾, observed bending and broken.
 Concrete foundation partially damage around entire of the shell tank.
 Cracking on asphalt around shell tank. (See attached photo)
 Earthling system damage due to expose to fire.
4. Internal inspection:
 Slightly minor corrosion could be seen at different areas.
 Shell internally seams were painted at the first course only. (See attached
photo)
 Dip hatch dead volume point in bad condition.
 Drain or cleaning pipe3 inch in serviceable condition.

5. Non-destructive testing (NDT)ultrasonic testing.

Employing technique like ultrasonic testing to identify the actual thickness

compare to the original of the tank, this discussed below:

No of course Thickness (mm) Max Thickness (mm) Min

1st 8.0 7.6
2nd 7.9 7.5
3rd 6.0 5.9
4th 6.0 5.9
5th 6.2 6.0
6th 6.2 5.9
7th 6.1 6.0

6. Hardness Testing:

Location Hardness (HB)

Max Min
Roof plates 98 83
Shell plates 91 82
Bottom plates 108 86

7. Tank Bottom:
 Bottom internally, hard product scale and contamination noticeable
 Sign of firing inside the tank bottom there for create dark soot at
roof. (See attached photo)
 Deformation such as bulges and bending occurred at most of the
entire tank bottom.
 Bottom painting was chipped and flaking exposing base metal.
 Ultrasonic wall thickness measurement taken randomly.

Location Thickness (mm)
Max Min
Sketch plate 8.0 7.8
Rectangular plates 8.1 7.7
Annular plates 7.7 7.4

 Bulges in tank bottom:

All rectangular, and sketch plates found at inward bulged. Due to
extreme firing that was occurring inside tank bottom.
8. Cone Roof Tank:
 Slightly sign of corrosion could be seen at the south to east side due
to chipped and peel of painting.
 2 holes found between roof and shell plates which were discussed
below.
 1 hole observed at south side to the dip hatch, and second hole at
west side.
 UT thickness measurement applied for tank roof plates.
 According to random reading of thickness there is no reduction in
roof plate’s thickness measurement.

Thickness (mm) Max Thickness (mm) Min

5.2 5.0

9. Painting: Painting externally and internally of the tank were found chipped
and flaking exposing base metal. (See attached photo)
10. Shell plates that were exposed to extreme firing and gun
shooting externally:
No of course Length of the plates(m) High of the plate(m) Plates gun
shooting
1st 14.5 1.5
2nd 5.6 1.5 2 holes, 6 dents
3rd 4 1.5 1 hole ,1 dent
4th 3 1.5 1 hole 2 dents
5th 4 1.5 1 hole, 1dent
6th 11 1.5 3holes,
7th 10 1.5 2holes1 dent

11.Recommendations:
1. Repair the previous shell and bottom plates should be accordance with
recognized industry standers and establish procedures.
2. Replace all rectangular, and sketch plates, thickness for both 8mm.
3. At the 1st course replace 3 sheets plate (Dimensions shall be 6 m length
& 1.5m height).with thickness (8mm).
4. At the 2nd course replace 1 sheets plate. (Dimensions shall be 6m
length & 1.5m height). With thickness (8mm).
5. At the 3rd course replace 1 sheets plate. (Dimensions shall be 6m length
& 1.5m height). With thickness (6mm).
6. At the 4th course replace 1 sheets plate. (Dimensions shall be 6m length
& 1.5m height). With thickness (6mm).
7. At the 5th course replace 1 sheets plate. (Sheet plate dimensions shall
be. 6m length & 1.5m height). With thickness (6mm).
8. At the 6th course replace 2 sheets plate. (Dimensions shall be 6m length
& 1.5m height). With thickness (6mm).
9. At the 7th course replace 2 sheets plate. (Dimensions shall be 6m length
& 1.5m height). With thickness (6mm).
10.Gun holes should be repair by insert new plate minimum dimensions
(300mm)
11. All dents shall be repair filling by welding.
12. Replace inlet pipe with all components. Which includes, gate and
check valves DN100mm .And sample bypass line ¾.
13. Replace main inlet spool with flange, and drain valve DN100mm.
14. Replace out let pipe DN 150mm after elbow.
15. Replace two cooling pipes DN100mm.
16. Replace instrument cable.
