How to Write Proper Class Notes
1. Be Prepared
- Bring your notebook, pens, and highlighters.
- Have your textbook or lesson open to the correct page.
- Write the date and the lesson title at the top of the page.
2. Listen for Main Ideas
- Don’t try to write every word the teacher says.
- Focus on big ideas, examples, and anything the teacher repeats or writes on the board.
3. Organize Clearly
- Use headings and subheadings to separate topics.
- Use bullet points or numbers for lists.
- Leave space between sections for adding later notes.
4. Use Abbreviations & Symbols
- Example: w/ = with, ex. = example, imp. = important.
- Create your own shortcuts for fast note-taking.
5. Highlight Vocabulary
- Write new words clearly, with definitions and an example sentence.
- Star or underline important terms.
6. Summarize Grammar Rules
- Note down the rule in your own words.
- Write 1–2 example sentences from the book or teacher.
7. Include Visuals
- Draw simple charts, arrows, or mind maps to show connections.
- Diagrams can help you remember faster.
8. Write Key Phrases for Skills
- Listening/Reading: note the main idea + key details.
- Speaking: note useful expressions or sentence starters.
- Writing: note linking words, useful sentence frames.
9. Review & Revise
- After class, read your notes again the same day.
- Add missing information, correct mistakes, or rewrite messy parts.
- Highlight or box the most important points.
10. Keep Notes Neat & Consistent
- Always use the same format (titles, bullet points, colors).
- This makes it easy to study later for tests or homework.

Remember: Good notes are not about writing a lot, but about writing the right things clearly so you can
use them later.
