CURVILINEAR MOTION

Projectile Motion Follow a parabolic

Trajectory

The vertical Component of Porjectile

is under constant downward
gravitational acceleration (ay=-g)
and the horizontal component is at
constant velocity(ax=0)

For easy handling, resolve the

motion intial X and rectiliniear
motion.
FLIGHT OF PROJECTILES

If air resistance, wind velocity, and rotation of

the earth were not neglected, ax and ay would
become variable quantities, and the differential
kinematic equations of motion would have to
be solved to obtain the proper equations for the
flight of the projectile.
CURVILINEAR MOTION
IMPORTANT NOTES!
ay = -g
ax= 0
vy is positive if directed
upward and negative if
directed downward
At A At C
VAx = Vox Vcx = Vox
VAy = 0 From Vy 2 = Voy 2 - 2gy
VA = Vox Vcy = Voy, where Vo, is
At B, negative
VBx, = Vox Vc = Vo
VBy is negative
EXAMPLE 1

A projectile is fired from the top

of a cliff 300 ft high with a
velocity of 1414 ft per sec
directed at 45° to the
horizontal. Find the range on a
horizontal plane through the
base of the cliff
EXAMPLE 2

A shell leaves a mortar with a

muzzle velocity of 500 ft per sec
directed upward at 60° with the
horizontal. Determine the
position of the shell and its
resultant velocity 20 sec after
firing. How high will it rise?
EXAMPLE 3

The car shown in the

figure is just to clear the
water-filled gap. Find the
take-off velocity v.
EXAMPLE 4

In the figure, a ball thrown

down the incline strikes it at a
distances = 77.591 m. If the ball
rises to a maximum height h =
19.634 m above the point of
release, compute its initial
velocity Vo and inclination 0.
SEATWORK

An arrow is shot towards a wall 50m

away with an initial velocity that makes
an angle of 45 with the horizontal. It
strikes the wall 35-m above the ground.
Assuming the arrow was released from
the ground level, find the initial velocity
of the arrow.
