Lesson Plan 1: Introduction to the English language as a subject.
Objective: To provide students with an understanding of skills, techniques and subject content of O
level English language. This will include an introduction to English language as a subject, clearly
highlighting the difference between spoken, written and heard English in daily life and that which is
required of them to know for the O levels examination. An insight into the required vocabulary banks,
paper pattern, reading and writing skill set. The students will also be taught basic English language
skills including grammar, punctuation, sentence structuring and parts of speech with the help of ice
breakers and interactive activities to help them in being thoroughly well-versed in the subject with a
clear understanding of its principles.
Duration: 60-75 minutes
Introduction (10 minutes): Introduce the language as a subject, discuss the subject content and paper
pattern.
Ice breakers and Activities (60 minutes):
Provide students with quizzes testing the usage of basic English grammar, punctuation and
parts of speech.
Reviewing basic concepts of English in interactive sessions covering the topics of sentence
structuring and verbal story telling.
Activity Structure:
1. Grammar.
o A set of five questions testing grammatical skills of student.
o A set of two fill in the blanks questions testing grammatical skills of students.
2. Punctuation.
o A set of five sentences that require scrutiny and correction of wrong punctuation.
o A short story with no punctuations required to be punctuated correctly.
3. Parts of speech.
o Five sets of questions testing usage of each part of speech where the correct part of
speech may need to be identified.
o Five sentences to be written that display maximum usage of each part of speech.
Vocabulary Banks (5 minutes):
The students will be provided with a vocabulary bank that may help them in written English skills and
essay structuring.
Lesson Plan 2: Introduction to sentence types, phrasal verbs and compound words
Objective: To provide students with an Introduction to the types of sentences demonstrating their
usage by live sentence constructing including previously learnt language skills. Students will be
constructing two sentences to ensure that their understanding of each type of sentence is clear and
thorough. The students will also be introduced to compound words and phrasal verbs, and will be
provided with compound word and phrasal verb banks and model answers displaying examples of
both of their usage.
Duration: 60-75 minutes
Introduction (15 minutes): Introduce different types of sentences with the help of examples and live
sentence constructions.
Sentence construction (15 minutes):
Students will construct two sentence for each sentence type.
Compound words and phrasal verbs (20 minutes):
• Students will know the definitions and basic concepts pertaining to compound words
and phrasal verbs.
• Students will be demonstrated the usage of compound words and phrasal verbs with
live sentence constructions .
Vocabulary Banks, compound word banks, phrasal verb banks (15 minutes):
The students will be provided with a vocabulary bank that may help them in written English skills and
essay structuring.
Lesson Plan 3: Introduction to Figurative language, short story writing and sentence
construction.
Objective: To provide students with an understanding of figurative language, introducing them to the
various types of figurative speech. Students will be demonstrated the usage of figurative language
with the help of sentences using them or model answers that serve as examples for exemplary usage
of figurative speech. Students will also be asked to demonstrate the skills learnt in the previous
lessons and use the provided vocabulary banks to write short stories of a minimum of 100 words and a
maximum of 200 words. They will also be constructing 10 sentences amalgamating all previously
learnt skills to showcase their learning. This sentences will be considered to be their own model
answers as they must display usage of good vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, parts of speech,
figurative language and sentence types.
Duration: 60-75 minutes
Introduction (20 minutes): Introduce different types of figurative speech with the help of examples
and live sentence constructions. Students will also be provided with model short stories with
exemplary usage of basic English language skills.
Short story writing (40 minutes):
• Demonstrate planning the stories by constructing a mind map of all learnt concepts.
• Encourage students to write two short stories that display their implementation of
learnt concepts.
Sentence construction (15 minutes):
The students will construct 10 sentences based on previously learnt language skills.
