ACTIVITY 2
COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUS
It is requirement for any chemist student to be familiarized with the
equipment and apparatus used in chemistry laboratory experiments. The main
purpose of chemistry laboratory is to provide hands-on experiences of various
chemical principles. In so doing, one becomes familiar with laboratory
equipment and procedures and with the scientific method.

OBJECTIVE: To be able to draw the following apparatus correctly and be

familiar with each of them.

PROCEDURE: Draw the following apparatus RESPECTIVELY on the space

provided; label them properly.

Beaker, Erlenmeyer flask, Florence flask, Glass rod, Test tube, Test tube rack,
Test tube holder, Test tube brush, Watch glass, Iron ring, Crucible with cover,
Wire gauze, Iron Stand, Clay triangle, Bunsen burner, Iron clamp, Burette,
Pipette, Aspirator, Evaporating dish, Crucible tong, Graduated cylinder,
Funnel, Water trough, Weighing scale, Reagent bottle, Volumetric flask,
Mortar and pestle, Thermometer, Tripod, Wash bottle. At the end of the
exercise write the function for each apparatus drawn.
The output must be neat and clean, you can use pencil in sketching but label it
with black ball pen after. Use long bond paper.

APPARATUS FUNCTIONS
A beaker is a cylindrical container with a wide
Beaker mouth and spout, used for holding, mixing,
heating, and roughly measuring liquids.
Erlenmeyer flask is a cone-shaped container
Erlenmeyer flask with a narrow neck and flat base, used for
mixing without spills, heating evenly, storing,
and sealing liquids
Florence flask is used for heating, boiling, and
Florence flask storing liquids, designed to distribute heat
evenly.
Glass rod is used for stirring solutions and
Glass rod mixing chemicals safely.
Test tub is used for holding, heating, and
observing small amounts of substances.
Test tube
Test tube rack is used for holding and
Test tube rack organizing test tubes in an upright position.

Test tube holder is used for holding a test tube

Test tube holder while heating or when it is too hot to touch.

Test tube brush is used for cleaning the inside

Test tube brush of test tubes.

used for holding small samples, evaporating

Watch glass liquids, or covering beakers.

It supports glassware or containers during

Iron ring heating.

Crucible with cover is used for heating

Crucible with cover substances to very high temperatures

Is placed on an iron ring to support glassware

Wire gauze and spread heat evenly.
Iron Stand It supports equipment like rings, clamps, or
flasks during experiments.

It supports a crucible when heating over a

Clay triangle flame.

It produces a controlled flame for heating,

Bunsen burner sterilizing, and combustion.

Use to hold glassware or equipment firmly on

Iron clamp an iron stand.

Used to measure and delivers precise volumes

Burette of liquid in titrations.

Used to transfer or measures small, precise

Pipette amounts of liquid.

It creates suction for filtration or transferring

Aspirator liquids.

It is used for heating solutions to evaporate

Evaporating dish solvents.

It is used for handling hot crucibles and other

Crucible tong heated equipment.

Used to measures accurate volumes of liquids.

Graduated cylinder
Used to guide liquids or powders into
Funnel containers with small openings.

Used to hold water for collecting gases by

Water trough displacement.

Weighing scale Used to measure the mass of substances.

It is used to store chemical reagents safely.
Reagent bottle
It is used to prepare solutions of precise
volumes and concentrations.
Volumetric flask
It is used to grind solids into fine powder or
paste.
Mortar and pestle
It is used to measure temperature accurately.
