Introduction
This project focuses on optimizing a mechanical component using Ansys software to improve its
design by minimizing weight while maintaining structural integrity. The aim is to apply both
parametric and topological optimization techniques to a simple part such as a bracket. This
hands-on experience enhances understanding of simulation tools and modern engineering design
practices.
Parametric Optimization
First, I selected a basic mechanical component-a bracket-for the optimization study. The 3D
geometry was created using Ansys DesignModeler, and structural steel was chosen as the material.
Proper boundary conditions, including fixed supports and applied loads, were defined.
In the parametric optimization stage, key variables like thickness and fillet radius were identified.
The main objective was to reduce the weight of the part while keeping a minimum safety factor as a
constraint. Ansys' parametric optimization tools were used to run several iterations and find the best
design parameters that met the objectives.
Topological Optimization
Following parametric optimization, I conducted a topological optimization to further reduce material
use. The goal was to retain about 40-50% of the original material while maintaining strength. Ansys
was used to define the retention percentage and run the optimization. The resulting geometry
showed a more efficient design with significantly reduced weight and a good balance of material
distribution.
Design Comparison
Three designs were compared:
- Original Design: Full material use, no optimization.
- Parametrically Optimized Design: Improved geometry based on refined parameters.
- Topology-Optimized Design: Lightweight structure with reduced material, maintaining performance.
The final topology-optimized model showed the best material efficiency while still satisfying
structural requirements. This comparison helped visualize the benefits of optimization in product
design.
Conclusion
This project successfully demonstrated the use of Ansys for both parametric and topological
optimization. I learned how to improve a design by systematically adjusting parameters and using
advanced tools to reduce weight while preserving strength. These skills are valuable for real-world
engineering tasks and efficient product development.
