EVOLUTION OF

TRADITIONAL
TO NEW MEDIA
OBJECTIVE:
a.To understand how media has evolved from
traditional forms (such as newspapers, radio, and
television) to new media (such as social media,
websites, and digital platforms) and;
b. to explore how this evolution has changed the
way people communicate, access information,
and participate in society.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF
MEDIA AND
COMMUNICATION
• According to the pioneering research of Dr. Kathryn
Barnand, founder of the Center for Infant Mental
Health and Development at the University of
Washington; “That even infants try to communicate
with their caregivers using non-verbal cues. Like
babies, early humans only needed to communicate
with people within a small circle, so sounds and
gestures were enough."
• It employs three primary categories of symbols:
1. logograms, which stand for whole words or
concepts
2. phonograms, which are analogous to alphabetic
letters in representing sounds; and
3. determinatives, which function as pictorial cues.
FORMS OF
COMMUNICATION
IN DIFFERENT
AGES:
Prehistoric Age Industrial Age The Electronic Age Digital Age

Prehistoric Age (1500 BC – 1500 AD)

• Prehistory is the period of human activity

between the use of the first stone tools.
•People discovered fire, developed paper
from plants, and forged weapons and tools
with stone, bronze, copper and iron.
• EXAMPLE FORMS OF MEDIA
1. Cave paintings (35,000 BC)
2. Clay tablets in Mesopotamia (2400 BC)
3. Papyrus in Egypt (2500 BC)
4. Acta Diurna in Rome (130 BC)
5. Dibao in China (2nd Century)
6. Codex in Mayan region (5th Century)
7. Printing press using wood blocks (220 AD)
Industrial Age (1730s – 1930s)
• The Industrial Age is a period of history that
encompasses the changes in economic and social
organization. People used the power of steam,
developed machine tools, established iron
production, and the manufacturing of various
products (including books through the printing
press)
• EXAMPLE FORMS OF MEDIA
1. Printing press for mass production (1900)
2. Newspaper - The London Gazette (1740)
3. Typewriter (1800)
4. Telephone (1876)
5. Motion Picture Photography/Projection (1890
6. Commercial motion pictures (1913)
7. Motion Picture with Sound (1926)
8. Telegraph
9. Punch cards
The Electronic Age (1930s – 1980s)
• The invention of the transistor ushered
in the Electronic Age. People harnessed
the power of transistors that led to the
transistor radio, electronic circuits, and
the early computers. In this age, long
distance communication became more
efficient.
• EXAMPLE FORMS OF MEDIA
1. Transistor Radio 2
2. Television (1941)
3. Large electronic computers Mainframe
computers - i.e. IBM 704 (1960)
4. OHP, LCD projectors
Digital Age (1500 BC – 1500 AD)
• The Internet paved the way for faster
communication and the creation of the social
network. People advanced the use of
microelectronics with the invention of personal
computers, mobile devices, and wearable
technology. Moreover, voice, image, sound and
data are digitalized. We are now living in the
information age.
• EXAMPLE FORM OF MEDIA:
1. Web browsers
2. Mosaic (1993)
3. Internet Explorer (1995)
4. Blogs: Blogspot (1999)
5. Wordpress (2003)
6. Social networks: Friendster (2002), Multiply
(2003), FB (2004), Instagram
7. Microblogs: Twitter (2006), Tumblr (2007)
8. Video: YouTube (2005)
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
TRADITIONAL AND NEW
MEDIA
• Traditional media uses analogy technology to
deliver one-way information to large audiences on
fixed schedules (like TV, radio, and newspapers)
while new media uses digital platforms and the
internet to provide on-demand, interactive, and
multi-directional communication that transforms
consumers into both receivers and producers of
information.
Advantage of Disadvantage of
new/digital media new media:

• Instant access to • Information overload

information and distractions
• Broader participation and • Cyberbullying,
engagement privacy risks, and
misinformation
• Freedom of expression
• Digital divide – not
and creativity everyone has equal
access
OVERALL CONCLUSION
• Media has evolved from simple tools like cave
paintings to advanced digital platforms like social
media. Each stage improved how people
communicate and access information. Today,
media connects the world instantly but also brings
challenges like misinformation and unequal
access. Understanding this evolution helps us use
media wisely and responsibly.
