Ernest Rutherford

Ernest Rutherford was a New Zealand-born

physicist who became known as the "father of
nuclear physics." His most famous achievement
was the gold foil experiment, which
revolutionized the understanding of the atom. In
this experiment, he fired positively charged alpha
particles at a thin sheet of gold foil. The results
were unexpected: while most particles passed
straight through, a small fraction were deflected
at large angles, and a very few even bounced
back. This led Rutherford to propose the nuclear
model of the atom in 1911. The model stated that
an atom's mass and positive charge are
concentrated in a tiny, dense core called the
nucleus, with electrons orbiting this nucleus in a
vast empty space. This discovery contradicted the
prevailing "plum pudding" model of the atom and
laid the groundwork for modern atomic theory.
