READING COMPREHENSION AND ITS RELATION TO THE ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AT WEST MINDORO
ACADEMY
CHAPTER 1: The Problem and Its Background
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents (1) nature and background of the study, (2) statement of the
problem, (3) objective of the study, (4) significance of the study (5) scope of the study.
Nature and Background of the Study
An advance level of reading proficiency is reading comprehension. Students in their senior
year of high school should be able to read English Literature with advanced comprehension.
The Philippines, where reading is taught in a foreign language that is also the medium of
instructions, is where the reading problem is felt the most. “According to the Swanson
Committee’s findings, reading is one of the subjects where Filipinos students tend to struggle.
Based on the research paper conducted by Joey M. Mataac L.P. T. of Malibago, Torrijos,
Marinduque 4903, Philppines Malibago, Torrijos, Marinduque 4903, found that ADHD,
dyslexia, a limited vocabulary, a working memory deficiency, and other factors are some of
the main causes of low reading skills also people who are reading out of boredom or
disinterest may also have difficulty understanding what they are reading. Poor reading and
comprehension skills can be overcome with speed reading. Hence, due to the pandemic the
education sector is one of the highly affected”.
‘According to UNICEF study, less than 15% of Filipinoschoolchildren, or roughly three out
of every twenty students, are able to read simple texts. This is largely because of the
country’s longest school closure, which lasted more than 70 weeks as of the middle of
February and was brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic”. Additionally, it was discovered
that the low reading implementation during modular distance learning at home is the cause
of the declining reading development. The researcher advised starting readers to build a
habit of reading at home in light of the study’s findings. Moreover, the majority of nations
have temporarily shut down educational institutions in order to slow the spread of the
COVID-19 pandemic and lower infection rates for nearly eight pandemic months
(UNESCO, 2020). More than 1.2 billion students worldwide, including more than 28
million in the Philippines, have been impacted by this closure (UNESCO, 2020). The
implementation of online platforms was prompted by responses like community lockdown
and community quarantine in a number of nations, which encouraged students and teachers
to study and work from home (Crawford et al., 2020). However, the adoption of online
learning came with a number of hazards, issues, and difficulties for professors and students,
particularly in higher education institutions (HEIs) (Bao, 2020). As of July 30, 2020, there
were 89, 378 cases in the Philippines, while there were more than four million cases
worldwide (DOH, 2020). (World meter, 2020). Leaders in education made the decision to
embrace the new standard in response to these circumstances. The learning continuity plan
(LCP), which will be implemented by the department of Education (DepEd) at the
elementary level, will be force for the School Year 2020-2021 and classes will begin on
October 5, 2020 rather than June 2020. (DepEd, 2020). To ensure that every student
receivers a high quality, inclusive, and accessible education, it will become the new normal
in education, and enhancing educational planning and health is a concern. School at all
levels in the Philippines, where COVID19 infections are still on the rise as of now, must
address these issues and thoroughly examine their plans and procedures for implementing
the new normal. Depending on the COVID-19 constraints and the specific context of the
students in the school or community, school may choose one or a mix of the following
learning delivery methods.
To sum up everything that has been stated, the researcher wants to apply this method
to know the effectiveness of reading on Academic Performance of junior high school students
in West Mindoro Academy. Reading is a talent that should be fostered in every learner during
the early stages of their schooling. It is first discussed in kindergarten before being
emphasized in the first part of grade three. Because reading is systematically taught level by
level in grade three, students at this stage are referred to as beginning readers. In the early
reading level, phonological awareness and word recognition are two characteristic that are
taken into account. Learning modalities will be used for alternative learning delivery because
the Department of Education promised that education must continue. However, parents and
instructors have different opinion on the subject. The complexity of learning to read at this
early age shouldn’t be jeopardized by the current educational system.

the present School Year, 2023-2024. We expected to finish this by the end of school year.
CHAPTER 2: REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter shows previous studies that related in our study. It contains numerous
sources that construct using one paragraph.
I. Reading Comprehension
Filipinos currently have very poor performance in terms of reading comprehension.
As of Cristina Eloisa Baclig, she states that the Phillipines’s reading proficiency has
consecutively dropped since 2016 (2019). In an article written by Ratziel San Juan, in the
2018 Programmed for International Student Assessment (PISA), the Philippines received
the lowest reading comprehension score out of 79 participating nations and economies
(2019). However, according to a journal about effective practices for developing Reading
Comprehension, Strategies shouldn't be utilized in isolation, and skilled readers don't only
make predictions after reading a book. Instead, proficient readers constantly employ a
variety of techniques (Nell K. Duke and P. David Pearson, 2017). Moreover,
Comprehension understands a text's concepts and the connections between those ideas, and
requires the capacity to read beyond the words (McNamara, 2007). For an instance it aids in
enhancing language quality and sentence clarity as well as it improves your command of
the language (Harappa blogs, 2020).
II. Correlation of Reading Comprehension to Academic Performances
Having the capacity to understand the importance of reading comprehension to our
academic performance as well as to our lives.According to the Australian Christian College,
reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and general knowledge of students who read
independently are higher than those who do not. In comparison to their non-reading peers,
they improve as readers, perform better on achievement exams across the board, and
possess more in-depth subject knowledge (2019). Reading comprehension and academic
achievement are closely related. As a result, one of today's education's top priorities is to
prepare people with strong literacy skills who can understand and analyze what they read
(Moreillan, 2007). Due to this, the Department of Education (DepEd) has introduced the
Hamon: Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs Initiatives), which aims to make every learner a reader
at the level appropriate for his or her grades (2019). This appears to be at odds with reality,
though, as despite the fact that most Filipinos are literate, many of them continue to live in
poverty and even those who have completed their tertiary education still find it difficult to
compete in the global labor market where workers from nations like India and Vietnam are
far more skilled than they are (Marga Manlapig, 2020).
Reading comprehension is a crucial skill for students to learn because data can be
found in text constantly. Around the world, educational systems have received criticism for
being unsatisfactory, and many scholars have concentrated on raising student achievement
(Prof. Dr. Sait Akbaşlı & Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şahin, 2016). Adults who develop their reading
comprehension abilities are better able to comprehend work instructions. They have higher-
quality lives and are more efficient at work and in communication ( “Reading at the speed
of thoughts”.,n.d.).
