1Would you believe January was not always the first month of the year? The ancient Roman calendar
system began in March and ended in February! Let's take a look at how the ancient Romans chose the
names of the 12 months of the year.
2It is believed the Romans named March after Mars, the Roman god of war. Some say April got its name
from the Latin word meaning "second", May was named after Maia, an earth goddess of growing plants.
Apparently, June has always been apopular month for weddings. The Romans named June after Juno, the
queen of the gods and weddings. July was named after Julius Caesar and Auqust was named after
Augustus Caesar.
3 Though we think of September, October, November, and December as months 9, 10, 11 and 12, these
months were 7, 8, 9, and 10 respectively, earlier. This is how they got their names. September's name
Comes from septem, Latin for "seven."" October's name comes from octo, Latin for "eiaht." November's
name comes from novem, Latin fornine." December's name comes from decem, Latin for "ten." Aperiod
of celebration at the end of the year into a month of its own, named after the festival Februa and this is
how February got its name.
4 Later, another month got added to the beginning of the year and named it January after Janus, the God
of beginnings and endings. In 1582, Pope Gregory adjusted the calendar with January as the first month.
This new calendar became known as the "Gregorian calendar." So, what about the days of the week? The
Romans had named the days of the week according to the planets. After the Saxon invasions, certain
rames were renamed. The name origins of the days of the week are listed below:
5 Sunday is an English translation of the Latin 'Sun's day', the old Teutonic people's sacred day of the sun.
Monday is from the word 'Monandaeg', meaning Moon's day. Tuesday is named in honor of the Teutonic
god Tiw, the son of Woden. Wednesday-is named after the supreme god Woden. Thursday is named for
Woden's other son, Thor, the god of thunder and lightning. Friday is from the Anglo-Saxon 'Frigg-daeg',
named to honor Frigg, the wife of Woden and the goddess of marriage and love. Saturday is named for the
Roman god of Saturn, considered a day of bad omen.
