FUNCTİONS AND GRAPHS

Let X and Y be certain sets. We say that there is a function

defined on X with values in Y if to each element xϵ X there
corresponds an element y ϵ Y. And denoted as follows:
5 x +3
for example y= is given. Find the domain of
y=f (x ), y=g (x) → x−5
definition of the function.

for example y=3 x ; y=4 x 2 +2 ; f ( x )= 5 , etc. We know that the denominator cannot be zero
→ 3−x → x−5 ≠0 → x ≠ 5
x → independent variable, argument D ( y )=(−∞ ; 5 ) ∪ ( 5 ;+∞ )
y → dependent variable, function
for example y=√ 6 x+ 4 is given. Find the domain of
for example y=3 x+ 2 is given. Compute the value of →
→ definition of the function.
a+ b−c according to the given table.
The expression under the square root cannot be negative:
x 5 b 4 2
6 x +4 ≥0 → 6 x ≥−4 → x ≥−
y a 20 c 3
Solution:
if x=5 , then y=a → a=3 ∙ 5+2→ a=17
if x=b , then y=20→ 20=3∙ b+ 2→ b=6
if x=4 , then y=c → c=3 ∙ 4+ 2→ c=14
D ( y )=

So, a+ b−c=17+6−14=9 for example y= √ x 2−9 is given. Find the domain of
→ x 2−7 x +10

for example f ( x )=3 x +5 is given , find the sum of definition of the function.

x −7 x+10 ≠ 0 x≠ 2;x ≠ 5

{

f ( 4 )=3 ∙ 4 +5=53 → f ( 4 ) + ( 2 )=53+17=70
2 → D( y )∈ (−∞ ;−3 ] ∪ [ 3 ; 5 ) ∪ ( 5 ;+∞ )
f ( 2 )=3 ∙ 2 + 5=17

Some even functions: y=cosx ; y=c ; y=x even number ;
y=| x| f ( 3 )=5 → f ( 3+8 )=f ( 11)=5
f ( 3 )=5 → f ( 3+2∙ 8 )=f ( 19 ) =5
Note: Free term in odd functions is equal to zero. f ( 4 )=6 → f ( 4 +8 )=f ( 12 )=6
f ( 4 )=6 → f ( 4 +2∙ 8 ) =f ( 20 ) =6
