Class Notes: The Water Cycle

Date: September 19, 2025

Subject: Science

Topic: The Water Cycle

1. Definition
The Water Cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the
surface of the Earth.
It shows how water changes states and moves between the atmosphere, land, and
oceans.

2. Main Stages
a. Evaporation

● Water changes from a liquid to a gas (water vapor).

● Happens when the sun heats water in rivers, lakes, and oceans.

b. Condensation

● Water vapor cools down and changes back into tiny droplets of liquid, forming
clouds.

c. Precipitation

● When clouds become heavy, water falls back to Earth as:

○ Rain

○ Snow
○ Hail

○ Sleet

d. Collection (or Accumulation)

● Water collects in oceans, rivers, lakes, or underground.

● The cycle repeats.

3. Importance of the Water Cycle

● Provides freshwater for humans, animals, and plants.

● Helps regulate Earth’s temperature.

● Moves nutrients around the environment.

4. Key Vocabulary

Word Meaning

Evaporation Liquid water turning into gas

(vapor).

Condensatio Gas cooling down to form liquid.

n

Precipitation Water falling to Earth (rain, snow,

etc.).
Collection Gathering of water on Earth's
surface.

5. Quick Diagram

6. Summary
The water cycle is a never-ending process that moves water through different stages.
It is essential for life on Earth and maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
