Prerequisite: Basics of ordinary and partial differential equations, complex numbers and variables.
Course objectives:
The main purpose of this course is to:
1. Study complex functions, analytic functions and special types of integrations using Cauchy’s theorem.
2. Study different numerical techniques with applications.
3. Learn Fourier and Laplace transforms in the engineering perspective.
4. Introduce the concepts of linear differential equations and associated applications.
5. Understand the concepts of calculus of variation
COURSE CONTENTS
Unit I. Complex Variables (09)
Analytic functions, Cauchy Riemann Equations, Line Integral in the complex plane, Cauchy Integral Theorem
& Cauchy Integral Formula & its consequences, Power series & Taylor Series, Poles, Singularity, Laurent’
Series, Residues, Evaluation of Real Integrals. Mathematical modelling by complex analysis.
Unit II. Numerical Methods to solve PDE (09)
Degree, order, Classification, Solution of First order Partial Differential Equations, boundary value problems,
Explicit and Implicit finite difference scheme, Stability of finite difference method, Vibrations of a string,
one dimensional heat equation, Laplace equation, Numerical Techniques for solving PDE, Mathematical
modelling by PDE.
Unit III. Laplace and Fourier Transforms (09)
Laplace Transform, Convolution Theorem, Periodic property, Unit step function, Dirac delta functions, Inverse
Laplace transform, Applications of Laplace transform for solving Differential equations. Fourier Transform,
Inverse Fourier Transform, Discrete FT, Applications and modelling by LT and FT.
Unit IV. Solution of Differential Equations (09)
Differential Equation Series Solution of differential equations, Bessel’s and Legendre’s differential equations,
Mass spring systems of multi degree freedom, Matrix formulation for differential equations in vibration theory,
Normal mode solution.
Unit V. Calculus of Variations (09)
Introduction, Functional, Euler’s equation, Isoperimetric Problem, Functional involving higher order
derivative, Approximate solution of boundary value problem, Rayleigh –Ritz method, Galerkin’s method,
Lagrange’s principle.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
On completion of the course, students will be able to
1. Apply concepts of complex variables to resolve engineering complications.
2. Identify, formulate and solve engineering problems by using proper Numerical techniques.
3. Express non periodic functions in the form of integrals.
4. Resolve the problems of linear algebra and find its applications
5. Apply concepts of calculus of variation to resolve engineering complications
