1 Read the passage and draw a tree diagram showing the classification.
The word ‘Literature’ is really NOT essay to define. Many interpretations are made about the word. But all are
incomplete. Some say that literature is the mirror of life, some others say that it is the criticism of life. Whatever
may be the controversy about the word, we may say that literature is that which reflects life. The branches of
literature are poetry, drama, novel and short stories. Poetry is of two kinds, imaginative and realistic. Drama is
either a comedy or a tragedy. Novels are also of many kinds, historical, psychological, realistic, scientific and
regional. Short story is that one which stands very close to life in spite of a little scope.
2 Convert the following paragraph into a flow chart.
The process of making cement is described in this flow chart. The two raw materials used in the process are
limestone and clay. Limestone is crushed, sized, dried and stored in storage silos. In the same way, Clay is
washed, crushed, and dried in storage basins. The two materials are mixed in the correct proportion and
ground in a tube mill (This mixture is known as slurry) and stirred in a correcting basin. It is then stored in a
storage tank. From there, it is fed into the rotary kiln where it is burnt at a high temperature of 1000 to 1700°C.
Here clinkers are formed which are sent to a cooler, to be cooled. At this stage, Gypsum is added to the clinker
and this mixture is powdered. The powdered mixture is the finished product, cement, and it is sent to the
storage silos ready for distribution.
3 Read the following passage carefully. Represent this by means of a flow chart.

4 Read the following extract and complete the table below:
What is soil? The original materials from which it has been formed through long ages are the earth's crust.
There are three kinds of rocks, made in three different ways. Igneous rocks were made when the molten
material of which the earth consisted long ago become cooler and solidified; granite, a very hard rock, is one of
these. Another kind of rock is sedimentary rock, formed when rivers brought down small pieces of material with
them as they flowed into the sea. The matter which they brought down with them fell to the bottoms of the sea,
and this sediment was slowly pressed and cemented together by other substances into rock. Then the crust of
the earth moved; the bottoms of the seas were raised, and when they reached a sufficient height become dry
land. Sedimentary rocks found in all kinds of places, even on high mountains. Shale, limestone, and chalk are
sedimentary rocks.
The third kind of rock is metaphoric, a rock which has been made by change due to heat. This was formed, for
instance, when the lava thrown out by volcanoes affected the material over which it flowed. The heat changed
the surface underneath and produced different kinds of rocks, of which slate and marble are two.

11 Complete the table based on the following information.
Why do they run? Running. It’s painful, tedious, and exhausting. So, why do so many Americans do it? People
run for many reasons. Most often, people run to stay in shape and to reach an ideal body weight. Studies show
that a combination of diet and exercise is the most effective way to lose weight, as it triggers a loss of body fat
and a proportional increase of lean tissue. Running, a rigorous cardiovascular exercise, allows a person to
burn an average of 100 calories per each mile he or she runs. Other popular activities, such as biking and
walking, only burn a fraction of those calories in the same amount of time. While the average human being
burns about 2000-2500 calories a day by simply existing, running 5 miles a day can burn an additional 500
calories, making it a legitimate way to lose weight. Furthermore, running is an easily accessible activity-with a
decent pair of sneakers and some determination, anyone can run.
Surprisingly, how fast a person runs has little effect on the number of calories he or she will burn. The most
important factor is weight. For example, a 220-pound person running an eight-minute mile burns 150 calories,
while a 120-pound person running at the same pace burns only 82. Every person’s body requires an excess of
3500 calories in order to gain a pound or a deficit of 3500 calories in order to lose a pound. Thus, 180-pound
person who runs 5 miles each day will lose about 5 pounds a month. However, as his or her weight goes down,
he or she will burn fewer calories per mile. Eventually, a runner’s weight will stabilize. When this will happen
depends on how much the runner eats and how far he or she runs.
Miles run Calories burn

12 Using the information provided in the given text, draw a flow chart describing the different stages
involved in the making of coins. Remember to give an appropriate title to your flow chart.
Coins are manufactured in a factory known as ‘mint’. There are three mints in India: Bombay, Calcutta and
Hyderabad. Production of coins at the mints is a complete process. It starts with the buying of unmixed metals
and their testing by the Assay Department. Then the metals are alloyed in oil-fired or electric arc furnaces, and
cast into ingots 40 cm wide, 15 cm thick and 6 m long. These ingots are reheated until the temperature is hot
enough for hot rolling. During this stage, the ingots pass through a series of rollers until they form long, thin
sheets which are of the thickness of a coin. From these thin strips, blank discs are punched. These are the
basic raw materials for the manufacture of coins. The blanks are heated to soften them, and they are rolled so
that the rim is raised. Finally they are stamped with the design of the coin. At every stage, defective pieces are
carefully sorted out, and (with the frequent checking and returning points) strict quality control maintained.
Rejects are returned to the alloying stage, together with the waste from the alloy strip.

There are two classes of sugar: Natural sugar and Processed sugar. What the common man uses is
generally processed sugar.
Fructose, glucose and maple syrup are natural sugars. Maple syrup is very popular in America. It can be
purchased from health food shops. Another natural sugar is honey, which is available in many forms and
flavours. Processed sugar, raw cane sugar, white sugar and soft brown sugar can be classified according to
the stages in the process at which they are produced in the refineries. Raw cane sugar is an early stage in the
process of making white sugar. It is of two types – Barbados and Demerara. Soft brown sugar is made from
either raw cane or white sugar. White sugar is the most widely consumed sugar. Sugar granules, icing sugar,
cube sugar, castor are some of the vicious kinds available in the market.
14 Show the following information in a diagram.
i. The cycle starts when water on the surface of the Earth evaporates. Evaporation means the sun heats the
water which turns into gas.
ii. Then, water collects as water vapor in the sky. This makes clouds.
iii. Next, the water in the clouds gets cold. This makes it become liquid again. This process is
called condensation.
iv. Then, the water falls from the sky as rain, snow, sleet or hail. This is called precipitation.
v. The water sinks under the surface and also collects into lakes, oceans, or aquifers. It evaporates again
and continues the cycle.
15 Reasons for the failure of students. Show the following information in a pie diagram. Gives the values
in percentage as per your own perception.
The failure of the students in the examinations is a very serious matter. There are many reasons for their
failure.
The students do not have proper study habits. They read without understanding. They spend their holidays and
spare time in watching T.V. They ignore their study for the sake of T.V. films and serials. Parents also do the
same. There is no motivation. They cannot improve themselves without motivation. The environment is also
very important. Today, lack of proper learning environment also comes in the way of their success.
Proper guidance to the students will help to overcome the problem of failure. But there is no proper guidance.
‘Low aim is a crime’, and this happens with the students today. Students fail to achieve success because of the
bad company and wastage of time in playing.
The failure rate can be minimized by proper guidance, motivation, strong will, keeping good company,
developing proper study habits and not wasting their time playing games and watching T.V.
Prepare a web diagram with the help of the above information.

Never, ever start any workout, even if it is just walking, without warming up first. And this is where most people
try to take a shortcut. Warming up prepares your whole system for extra activity ahead. Ina resting state,
muscles are short and somewhat stiff. Making sudden demands on them can muse a pulled muscles or a
strained back. Warming up stretches muscles and loosens joints, so your body performs with better flexibility
and speed. It gradually increases blood supply to the heart and makes the lungs ready to operate at full
capacity, reducing the risk of sudden strain
What counts as a good warm up? No matter what your main exercise is, experts insist that you take two or
three minutes to loosen up, rotating the joints and gently stretching muscles. Start the sport or workout in lower
gear, using the same movements that you expect of use later Build up for a few minutes still you are breathing
slightly faster and perspiring lightly. At this point, you are warmed up.

Butterflies go through a life cycle. There are four stages. The first stage is the eggs. This is where a girl
butterfly lays eggs. She lays them on a leaf. The second stage is the caterpillar. This is where the eggs hatch.
It takes about five days for the eggs to hatch. A caterpillar then comes out. At this stage, the caterpillar eats all
the time. It also grows really fast. Once it is all the way grown, the third stage starts. This stage is the chrysalis.
The caterpillar makes a chrysalis. The caterpillar is inside the chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, it starts to change.
It soon changes into a butterfly. Once the caterpillar has changed into a butterfly, the fourth stage starts. This is
also that last stage in the life cycle. The fourth stage is the butterfly. A butterfly comes out of the chrysalis. It
can now learn to fly. It can also find a mate. When it finds a mate, it lays eggs. Then the lifecycle process starts
all over again.

We all love birds, don’t we? Birds can surprise us by their flights. There are many birds with flight but
some have lost their ability to fly. The ability to fly is determined by shape, size and height. Griffon Vulture is
regarded as the highest flying bird (37,000 feet high) followed by common crane (33,000 feet high).
The Ostrich, Rhea, Emu and Cassowary cannot fly for various reasons. Though they have lost their
ability to fly they can run fast on their long, strong legs. Ostriches live in Africa and are found on the grassy
places. The Rhea of South America looks rather like the Ostrich but it is smaller and has three toes on each
feet, while the Ostrich has only two.
Emu is the second-largest bird. Next to its relative, Ostrich. Emu is found in Australia. It can sprint at 50
km/h. Cassowary is largely found in Papua, New Guinea. It is omnivorous and can run at 501 km/ h. It is very
interesting to read about our flightless friends. Go, explore more!

Summer and monsoon are important seasons in our country. Usually, the duration of Summer season is from
February to May and Rainy Season begins in June and continues up to September. The climate during
Summer is very hot and tiresome but Rainy Season makes the climate cool and fresh. Summer season affects
human beings by making them feel sweaty and uneasy whereas human beings sometimes catch cold and
fever during Rainy Season.
Nature is really bare and barren as the result of Summer Season but Rainy Season spreads out greenery
everywhere. The heat of Summer is prevented by using fans and sun coats whereas raincoats and umbrellas
prevent us from becoming wet in rainy Season. During Summer, digging and cleaning the land are the major
agriculture activities and Rainy Season witnesses sowing of the seeds. Thus, seasons have their impacts on

When GOD made man he bestowed him with blessings in abundance. God gave him strength, not just
physical strength but also the strength of mind to bear the weight of the burdens of his life. He needed to
confront issues, find solutions for them and move ahead in life ,taking problems in his stride. God gave him

Bears or ursines as a class are a relatively new evolutionary development in the animal kingdom. The
classification of bears as a group, in literature over the years, has at times been confusing and even
controversial. According to Roger A. Caras, most bears are remarkably similar to each other, with the exception
of a few species like the Indian sloth bear, the South American spectacled bear and the Arctic polar bear. The
following list of genera might make broad classifications. Simpler-Brown bears (Ursus) that inhabit North
America and Eurasia; Spectacled bears (Tremarctos) from South America : Sun bears (Helarctos) from South-
East Asia; Asiatic black bears (Selenarctos), inhabiting the middle to far East of Asia; American black bears

There are many different kinds of musical instruments. They are divided into three main classes according to
the way that they are played. For example, some instruments are played by blowing air into them. These are
called wind instruments. In some of these the air is made to vibrate inside a wooden tube, and these are said
to be of the woodwind family. Examples of woodwind instruments are the flute, the clarinet and the bassoon.
Other instruments are made of brass, the trumpet and the horn, for example. There are also various other wind
instruments like such as the mouth organ and the bagpipes.
Some instruments are played by banging or striking them. One obvious example is the drum, of which there
are various kinds. Instruments like this are called percussion instruments.
The last big group of musical instruments are the ones which have strings. There are two main kinds of
stringed instrument those in which the music is made by plucking the strings, and those where the player
draws a bow across the strings. Examples of the former are the harp and the guitar. Examples of the latter are
the violin and the cello.
30 Complete the table on the basis of the information given below:
There is an enemy beneath our feet - an enemy deadlier for his complete impartiality. He recognizes no
national boundaries, no political parties. Everyone in the world is threatened by him. The enemy is the earth
itself. When an earthquake strikes, the world trembles. The power of a quake is greater than anything man
himself can produce. But today scientists are directing a great deal of their effort into finding some way of
combating earthquakes, and it is possible that at some time in the near future mankind will have discovered a
means of protecting itself from earthquakes. An earthquake strikes without warning. When it does, its power is
immense. If it strikes a modern city, the damage it causes is as great as if it has struck a primitive village. Gas
mains burst, explosions are caused and fires are started. Underground railways are wrecked. Buildings
collapse, bridges fall, dams burst, gaping crevices appear in busy streets. If the quake strikes at sea, huge tidal
waves sweep inland. If it strikes in mountain regions, avalanches roar down into the valley. Consider the
terrifying statistics from the past 1755: Lisbon, capital of Portugal - the city destroyed entirely and 450 killed.
1970: Peru: 50,000 killed. In 1968 an earthquake struck Alaska. As this is a relatively unpopulated part, only a
few people were killed. But it is likely that this was one of the most powerful quakes ever to have hit the world.
Geologists estimate that during the tremors, the whole of the state moved over 80 feet farther west into the
Pacific Ocean. Imagine the power of something that can move an entire subcontinent! This is the problem that
the scientists face. They are dealing with forces so immense that man cannot hope to resist them. All that can
be done is to try to pinpoint just where the earthquake will strike and work from there. At least some
precautionary measures can then be taken to save lives and some of the property. (330 Words)'

Science is a systematized body of knowledge which collects facts, analyses them and establishes a causal
relationship of a particular phenomenon. Science can be divided in to natural and social sciences. Natural
science is mainly concerned with the physical world. It includes both physical and biological science physical
and biological sciences. Physical sciences consist of physics, chemistry geography, etc., and deal with
inanimate or non-living things. Biological science includes biology, zoology, physiology, etc., and deals with the
living beings or organism. In natural sciences experiments can be conducted under controlled conditions to find
out the causal relationship between different factors or elements to establish a principle or law. Under social
sciences we study subject like economics, sociology, History, philosophy, etc. Social science study Interaction
of persons with society. It deals with questions concerning social life A person's behaviour in society, that is his

The term 'cancer', derived from Latin term `cancrum', means crab. Cancer is lawless growth without control.
This disorder threatens a person's life. There are four groups of cancer. They are carcinomas, sarcomas,
lymphomas and leukemia. About 85% of cancers are Carcinomas which include cervical, breast, tongue,

text about flowering plants.
Flowering plants are of various types. Herbaceous flowering plants grow, set seed and die within one year;
biennial plant complete their life cycles in two years;
Perennials on the other hand, can live and grow for many years once they have been planted. Plants that

Sweet pea. Of the herbaceous perennials the most common are members of the Daisy family. The beautifully
scented Rose and Jasmine are both Woody and Semi-Woody perennials. There are two other types of plants;
bulbous plants and aquatic plants. The former grow from bulbs and tubers planted in the ground; examples of
this type are Gladiolus and Tulip. The latter, as their name suggests, grow in water, the most exquisite example

Use the following information to draw a pie diagram. You can allocate your own to the devices as per your
preference.
This graph shows the results of a survey in which people aged 16 and over were asked about their
preferred devices for accessing the internet. The question referred to going online at home and in other
places. Participants mentioned four main devices in their answers: a smartphone, a laptop, a tablet and a
desktop computer. The majority of participants prefer to use smartphones and laptops, with just three
per cent difference between the two. Nearly a third of participants prefer to go online with a smartphone.
Most people like to use a laptop. Desktop computer accounts for office users’ preferred devices. Only a small
minority prefer a device other than these main four.
In conclusion, since mobile and portable devices are the most popular choices, it is clear that many participants
are accessing the internet outside their homes. The desktop computer is the least popular of the four main
devices. In future, we can probably expect to see more and more people accessing the internet with
smartphones as their preferred choice.

53 The following points given below shows various methods to improve English language.
Transfer information into a pie chart . And value each method as per your perspective
1. Think in English
If you think in your native language and then try to speak English, you’ll always have to translate between
languages. Translating isn’t an easy thing to do! Even people fluent in two or more languages have
trouble switching between languages.
The solution is to think in English.
2. Talk to Yourself
Whenever you’re at home (or alone somewhere else) you can improve English speaking with your favorite
person: yourself.
If you’re already thinking in English, try speaking your thoughts out loud. Read out loud, too. Practice is
practice, and even if you don’t have anyone to correct your mistakes, just the act of speaking out loud will
help you become more comfortable speaking English.
3. Use a Mirror
Whenever you can, take a few minutes out of your day to stand in front of the mirror and speak. Choose a
topic, set a timer for two or three minutes and just talk.
Talk for the full two or three minutes. Don’t stop! If you get stuck on a word you don’t know, try expressing
your idea in a different way. You can always look up how to say that word after the two to three minutes
end. This will definitely help you find out what kinds of words or sentences you have trouble with.
4. Focus on English Fluency, Not Grammar
When you speak in English, how often do you stop?
The more you stop, the less confident you sound and the less comfortable you become. Try the mirror
exercise above, but challenge yourself to speak without stopping or stammering (taking pauses between
your words) the entire time.
5. Try English Tongue Twisters
Tongue twisters are series of words that are difficult to say quickly. One example is “The thirty-three thieves
thought that they thrilled the throne throughout Thursday.” Try saying this a few times! It’s not easy.
6. Listen and Repeat
Do you Watch TV shows or You Tube videos in English? Use them to improve your fluency. Choose a
short part of a show and repeat it line by line. Try to match the tone, speed and even the accent (if you can).
It doesn’t matter if you miss a few words, the important thing is to keep talking. Try to sound just like the
native speakers on the show.
54 Convert the following passage into a flow chart.
The earth contains a large number of metals which are useful to man. One of the most important of these is
Iron. The Iron ore which we find on the earth is not pure. It contains some impurities which we must remove by
smelting. The process of smelting consists of heating the ore in a blast furnace with coke and limestone and
reducing it to metal. Blasts of hot air enter the furnace from the bottom and provide the oxygen which is
necessary for the reduction of the ore. The ore becomes molten, and its oxides combine with carbon from the
coke. The non-metallic constituents of the ore combine with limestone to form a liquid slag. This floats on top of
the molten iron and passes out of the furnace through a tap. The metal which remains is pig iron. We can melt
this again in another furnace - a cupola - with more coke and limestone and tap it out into a ladle or directly into
moulds. This is cast iron.
