Lab evaluation schedule

1. Best 3 out of 5 evaluations (E1, E2, E3, E4, E5) will be

considered for grading.
2. No make-ups are conducted for lab classes.
3. Total lab assignment marks = 30 × 3 = 90 marks

Evaluation session plan

◆ You are allowed to carry only a pen and a calculator during the evaluative
sessions. Textbook or any other study material is not allowed during the
evaluative sessions.
◆ First 15 minutes – Start AUTOCAD LT on your system and define drawing
limits, units, layers and title block. Create a folder on the Desktop with
BITS_ID_First name.
◆ Next 30 minutes – Attempt the evaluative problem. Save your file at regular
intervals.
◆ After the completion of the attempt time – Save your work and turn off your
computer screen. Save one screenshot of the solution also in the folder. Your
file will not be evaluated if you continue working beyond the allotted time.
◆ Remaining lab timing – Instructors will come to you to evaluate the solution.
◆ All the students must remain seated until the evaluation of all the students is
completed during an evaluative session.
◆ After the complete evaluation, the instructor will discuss the solutions to
evaluative problems.

NC criteria

◆ Your lab attendance should be significant.

◆ You must attempt both the tests associated with the course.
◆ The passing marks for this course will be determined based on one of
the two criteria: 30% of the median of the total course score or 20% of the
average of the first three top scorers. The lower value between these two
criteria will be considered as passing marks in this course.

Overview of
engineering drawing
and its importance
Is it
Why design or why graphics language? important?

◆ Try writing a description of this

object.
◆ Test your written description by
having someone attempt to sketch
from your description.

BITS F110 Engineering EDP
Composition of Graphics language

◆ Graphic language in “engineering application”

uses lines to represent the surfaces, edges and
contours of the object.
◆ The language is known as “drawing”, “design”
or “drafting”.
◆ A drawing can be done using freehand,
instruments or computer methods.
◆ Engineering drawings are drawn as per accepted
standards and format, providing an effective and
efficient way to communicate specific information about
design intent.

BITS F110 Engineering EDP
Freehand drawing

◆ Lines are sketched without using instruments other than

pencils and erasers.
◆ Earliest milestone: Back in 1452-1519 by Leonardo da
Vinci (Italian artist, inventor, and mapmaker).

BITS F110 Engineering EDP
Instrument drawing

◆ Instruments are used to draw lines, circles, and curves

concisely and accurately.
◆ Drawings are usually made to scale.
◆ Earlier milestones: Coleman Sellers (American engineer and
innovator) and Henry Ford (American automobile manufacturer).

Instrument drawing

Initial instrument
◆ Pencil, T-square,
triangles, scales,
irregular (French)
curves, compasses,
dividers on board.

Drafting machines
◆ Replaced T-square,
triangles, scales, and
protractor.
BITS F103 Graphics
BITS F110 Engineering EDP
Computer drawing

◆ The drawings are usually made by commercial software

such as AutoCAD, Solid Works, Fusion 360, etc.

Introduction
Drawing Standards
• I.S.O (International Standards Organization) was
established in 1946.
• It developed a universally accepted set of drawing
standards.
• B.I.S. adopted the I.S.O. standard in 1983.

• One major set of engineering drawing standards

is ASME Y14.5 -2009 (US).
• A few other standards are JIS (Japan), BS (UK), AS
(Australia), DIN (Germany).
