Class 10 Science – Detailed Notes with PYQs

Chemical Reactions and Equations

• A chemical reaction involves rearrangement of atoms.
• General form: Reactants → Products.
• Types of reactions: Combination, Decomposition, Displacement, Double Displacement, Redox.
• Balancing is done to satisfy Law of Conservation of Mass.
• PYQ: Write the balanced equation for the reaction between Zn and HCl. Answer: Zn + 2HCl →
ZnCl■ + H■.
Acids, Bases and Salts
• Acids: Sour taste, turn blue litmus red, release H■ ions.
• Bases: Bitter taste, soapy touch, release OH■ ions.
• Salt: Product of acid + base neutralisation.
• Important: pH scale (0–14), indicators (litmus, phenolphthalein, methyl orange).
• PYQ: Name a salt used in making of baking powder. Answer: Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO■).
Metals and Non-Metals
• Metals: Malleable, ductile, good conductors.
• Non-metals: Brittle, poor conductors (except graphite).
• Reactivity series explains displacement reactions.
• Corrosion of metals (e.g., rusting of iron).
• PYQ: Why are metals good conductors? Answer: Presence of free electrons.
