SUBJECT: English Literature GRADE – VII DATE: 11th September, 2025

STUDENT’S NAME: TOPIC – Visitors - notes WORK SHEET - 9

Summary:
The speaker, who has long suffered from asthma, finds relief and peace while living in a quiet house
by the river. The calm environment, away from noisy crowds, makes him feel brighter, more rested,
and happier. When visitors arrive at his simple thatched hut, his son brings him his straw hat so that
he can go out and gather fresh vegetables from his garden. Though the gift is small, he offers it with
genuine warmth and friendship.

Analysis:
The poem emphasizes the themes of simplicity, health, and genuine human connection. Tu Fu
contrasts the healing, calming power of nature with the exhausting pressures of crowded life. By
showing how the quiet setting restores his strength and mood, the poet suggests that true happiness
comes from peace and balance rather than wealth or status.

Another important idea is generosity. The vegetables he offers are not valuable in material terms, but
the act reflects sincerity and hospitality. This shows that kindness and intention matter more than the
size of the gift.

The tone of the poem is peaceful and grateful, while the mood it creates for readers is one of
calmness and warmth. It invites us to value simple living, closeness to nature, and the honesty of
human relationships.
