Designing your Power Plant

❖ The designer starts with the variable characteristics of the demand it shall service to satisfy by
making a well-defined chronological or variable load curve, applying diversity and demand
factors. Using the well-defined characteristic of the demand in terms of the chronological
curve or variable load for a day, the rated capacity of the power plant can be estimated,
considering the demand, load, applying suitable demand and diversity factors.
❖ Using the generator capacities to satisfy the types of load, such as base load and peaking load
engines are selected through the performance parameters and specifications. The energy and
mass balances of the engine are established and in relation to the whole process cycle of the
working substance where all other equipment in the cycle are established as a coherent whole
of energy conversion from the primary to the final energy. All equipment are then specified
and lay-outed in the plant building and location boundaries, specifying the designer’s plant
management report.
❖ The capital and operational expenditures are established for the plant’s life cycle to establish
the cost of electricity weighing its economic, environmental, and sustainability impact.

General contents of the Engineering Technical Report (DESIGN, INSTALLATION, OPERATION, AND
MAINTENANCE OF POWER PLANT WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY)

1. CHAPTER 1 (Demand and location Identification: Power supply and Demand variable
characterization) - characteristics of the customer's load, and define your company's identity, and
location (minimum 4 pages).
a) Define the number of substations and feeders per substation, and establish their
maximum demand based from their energy requirements, types, total connected load.
b) Estimate and establish the power station capacity.
c) Determine the baseload, peaking load, and reserve over peak capacities.
2. CHAPTER 2 ( Load satisfaction through assignment to base load steam power, renewable energy,
and peaking load diesel power) and (power cycle schematics)
Process or Schematic of you power cycle for Steam and Diesel power. Diagrams, heat and
mass balances, and state-parameters computations. Minimum pages shall be according to the
needs of your design.
For baseload
a) Conceive your reheat-regenerative steam power cycle.
b) Initially assume a turbine efficiency (based from turbine reference graphs or from book
sources).
c) From your determined rated capacity of turbo-generator (based from your established
variable load to satisfy by the steam power design), and your initially assumed efficiency
determine your steam inlet pressure and temperature. Assume applicable conditions for
feedwater heating and condenser pressures and temperatures.
d) Draw your Cycle Schematic and TS diagrams.
e) Determine the heat and mass balances in terms of enthalpies of states, the Engine Power
per kg of steam, and the efficiency of your steam power cycle. The parameters determined
shall be the basis for your specifications and selection of all main equipment involved in
the cycle. These parameters are operating pressures and temperatures, energy and flow
rates describing the input and output power or energy (energy balances), and input and
output masses (mass balances).
For peaking load
a) Define the number of diesel engine-generators based from peak load requirement.
b) Define the fuel specifications, requirement, and day tank volume.
c) Provide a diesel engine-generator specification.
For reserve over peak
a) Determine the battery storage capacities for reserves.
b) Or Renewable energy capacities such as solar, etc.

3. CHAPTER 3 (Economic Analysis)

a) Estimate the capital expenditures (from DOE cost chart references)
b) Estimate the operation expenditures
c) Establish benefit to cost ratio
d) Establish the cost of electricity for your power station
e) Make recommendations
