Museum Scavenger Hunt
Living in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex, we are fortunate to be near many art museums and galleries.
This allows us to not just talk about art and its impact, but to go out and experience it. For this
assignment there is not a specific museum you have to go to, or specific pieces that you must find. You
get to choose which venue(s) you want to visit. Take this as an opportunity to apply what you’ve learned
in class. Below is a list of the different sorts of things I want you to be on the hunt for. With the
exception of question 21 each of your answers needs to be over a different artwork. If you re-use an
artwork I will only count it the first time. Art viewed online does not count.

answer.
- While the artwork seems to depict a romantic landscape it may also be viewed as a conceptual
because of Alfred Jacob Millers incorporation of imagery to express ideas about the American
West. The title is as The Lake Her Lone Bosom Expands to the Sky .. is poetic and abstract
encouraging the audience to connect emotionally and spiritually rather than focusing solely on
the geography or the realism. It embodies the 19th century belief in natures spiritual power … a

a. What do you remember about this artist, and how does seeing their work in person affect your
perception of their work?
- I remember that Donatello was a key figure of the early Italian Renaissance which was
known for bringing a new sense of the realism and the emotion into sculpture. He was
one of the first to revive the classical techniques and the focus on the natural human
anatomy and the expression. Seeing David in the person that changed the way I
understood the piece….it’s much more delicate and the youthful than I expected. The
detailed and the craftsmanship and subtle confidence in Davids pose stood out more in
real life making the sculpture feel both the elegant and the powerful. It helped me
appreciate Donatellos innovation in using the bronze and his influence on the
Renaissance art.

- This piece of art is political as it directly confronts the racial violence and the societal conflicts of
the Civil Rights movement in the United States during the 1960s. Faith Ringgold created this
artwork as the reaction to the race riots of 1967 and the killing of the civil rights leaders. The
artwork also illustrates Black and white individuals such as men, women and the
children..engaged in a tumultuous and violent conflict, providing a stark and its unrefined
representation of America's racial divides. It is also not intended to be ornamental …. it’s
intended to stimulate. Ringgold utilized her platform to address the injustice and to reveal the
true conditions in the American urban areas.. ..

- This is among the Dallas Museum of Arts most important African pieces. It is a figure of a Yoruba
monarch from West African city and also its an important political and cultural center for over a
thousand years. Facial naturalism is unusually high tech proving that there was sophisticated bronze
casting in Africa hundreds of the years earlier than it was done in Europe. The Crowned Head is
culturally important because it challenges stereotypes about pre colonial African societies. It indicates
the sophistication, creativity and political organization of the Yoruba people. It also carries spiritual
meaning the Oni who was the king was believed to be a bridge between the human world and the
divine. This painting is an emblem of tremendous strength of African heritage, creativity and identity.

- Reflection:
I was drawn to The Icebergs immediately because of its massive size and the way it
captures such a cold desolate environment with vivid color and the detail. As I stood in
front of it I noticed the small floating mast near the bottom .. also a reminder that
people once tried to explore the places like this and its often failed. The stillness of the
scene and soft lighting make it feel the peaceful and the dangerous at same time. It
reminded me how powerful and the indifferent nature can be. Church painted this in the
1800s, but the icy landscape still feels fresh and relevant .. specially now when we’re
more aware of melting glaciers and the climate change. It’s a beautiful painting that
made me think deeply about the world and our place in it and also I was totally into it
and I felt many things that happened in my past and it helped me to moveon..
