Assertion-Reason type questions- two statements are given-one labelled Assertion (A) and the other labelled
Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) as given below.
a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
b) Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
c) A is true but R is false
d) A is false and R is also false
7. A: metallic shield in form of a hollow shell may be built to block an electric field.
R: In a hollow spherical shield, the electric field inside it is zero at every point.
8. A: point charge is brought in an electric field. The field at a nearby point will increase, whatever be the nature of
the charge.
R: The electric field is independent of the nature of charge.
Section-B
9. A 600 PF capacitor is charged by a 200V supply. It is then disconnected from the supply and connected to another
600 PF capacitor. How much electrostatic energy is lost in the process?
10. A non-conducting hemisphere of dielectric constant unity has uniform volume charge density p. if -q charge flies
from its flat surface to infinity, find the work done for the same.
11. A wire AB of length L has linear charge density ʎ=kx, where x is measured from end A of the wire. This wire is
enclosed by a Gaussian hollow surface. Find the expression for electric flux through the surface.
Section-C
12. Write the properties of equipotential surfaces. Why electric field lines are normal to equipotential surfaces.

13. An electric dipole consists of charges ± 2.0 × 10 -8 C, separated by a distance of 2 × 10−3 m. It is placed near a long
line charge of linear charge density 4×10−4 C m as shown in figure, Such that the negative charge is at a distance of
`2 cm from the line charge. Find the force acting on the dipole.

14. (a) Three concentric metallic shells A, B and C of radii a, b and c (a<b<c) have surface charge densities +𝜎, -𝜎 ,+𝜎
respectively. a) Find potential of three shells A, B, C
b) If shells A and C are at the same potential, obtain the relation between radii a, b, c.
15. Two identical charged spheres suspended from a common point by two massless strings of length l are
initially a distance d(d << l) apart because of their mutual repulsion. The charge begins to leak from both the
spheres at a constant rate. As a result charges approach each other with a velocity v. Then what is relation between
velocity v and as a function of distance x between them,
Section-D
16. When electric dipole is placed in uniform electric field, its
two charges experience equal and opposite forces, which
cancel each other and hence net force on electric dipole in
uniform electric field is zero. However these forces are not
collinear, so they give rise to some torque on the dipole. Since
net force on electric dipole in uniform electric field is zero, so
no work is done in moving the electric dipole in uniform electric
field. However some work is done in rotating the dipole against
the torque acting on it.

(i) The dipole moment of a dipole in a uniform external field Ē is P. Then the torque τ acting on the dipole is
(a) τ=p x E (b) τ = P. Ē (c) τ = 2(p + Ē) (d) τ = (P + E)
(ii) An electric dipole consists of two opposite charges, each of magnitude 1.0 μC separated by a distance of 2.0 cm.
The dipole is placed in an external field of 105 NC-1. The maximum torque on the dipole is
(a) 0.2 x 10-3 Nm (b) 1x 10-3 Nm (c) 2 x 10-3 Nm (d) 4x 10-3 Nm
(iii) Torque on a dipole in uniform electric field is minimum when θ is equal to
(a) 0° (b) 90° (c) 180° (d) Both (a) and (c)
(iv) When an electric dipole is held at an angle in a uniform electric field, the net force F and torque τ on the dipole
are
(a) F= 0, τ = 0 (b) F≠0, τ≠0 (c) F=0, τ ≠ 0 (d) F≠0, τ=0
(v) An electric dipole of moment p is placed in an electric field of intensity E. The dipole acquires a position such
that the axis of the dipole makes an angle with the direction of the field. Assuming that potential energy of the
dipole to be zero when 0 = 90°, the torque and the potential energy of the dipole will respectively be
(a) pEsinθ, -pEcosθ (b) pEsinθ, -2pEcosθ (c) pEsinθ, 2pEcosθ (d) pEcosθ, – pEsinθ

Section-E
17.(a) State Gauss’ theorem. Use it to derive the expression for electric field due to thin plane sheet.
(b) Charges Q1 and Q2 are at points A and B of a right-angle triangle OAB
(see figure). The resultant electric field at point O is perpendicular to the
hypotenuse, then what is value of Q1/Q2 in terms of x1 and x2
